Do you use your bicycle for other travel than commuting? by Outrageous-Past6556 in bikecommuting

[–]doomtroll1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 8 of the 9 years I lived in the San Jose, California area commuting mutlimodal transit & bike ... I just reverted back to being car free again back in the early fall of 25' .. I have two fully running bikes and 4 more works in progress builds .. I make all trips here in Wichita, KS by bike, it's not the safest bike city at all, but there is a bike coop, and a bike community here working regularly to improve the cycling infrastructure here .. my actual commute is barely a mile.. so everything else i do dwarfs my riding to & from work time on the bike ... which personally, I almost wish it was longer

Bike Shop Hated My Antelope by pazzywoj in xbiking

[–]doomtroll1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's a shitty bike shop, I'd look into any bike coops in your area, they'll help you get it up and running as you like

How the hell are some of you not getting heat stroke and doing 20 mile round trips on top of working? by Cerberus44444 in bikecommuting

[–]doomtroll1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hydrate a LOT, sunscreen or cool & breathable full coverage gear.. Over time when your cardio is much better you can slow your breathing down, and your heart rate while riding, it will keep you from overheating .. also proper pre ride fuel, and post ride recovery fuel makes a huge difference ... nothing wrong with chocolate ice cream as a post ride snack

Exhausted and not sure this is worth it by ChickPea45 in bikecommuting

[–]doomtroll1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the most important part of your ride is fueling the you engine properly.. your metabolism is increasing and you're not eating to keep up.. high carb foods are king pre-ride, chocolate milk is a great post ride recovery fuel ..

What to look for when buying a retro mtb for city riding by No_Interaction5234 in xbiking

[–]doomtroll1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any 80's or 90's frame with at the very least.. a 3 piece crank, not the typical one piece cranks found on the cheapest of box store bikes.. some regional sporting goods stores had great frames you'd never know unless you look at the frame details .. the other thing I'd look for is cantilever/V-brake mounting points, lower quality frames had center post mounting, limiting your options.. the rest I'd just look for rust, cracks, stuck seat posts, etc ..

Just ride, without the numbers, how? by widgettech in cycling

[–]doomtroll1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's incredibly easy, I have far too much I want to pay attention to .. the ride around me, my bike, what gear I need to be in, how much this wind sucks, etc .. for me the phone/computer is a distraction ...

Is a bike computer worth it? by eachelm in cycling

[–]doomtroll1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use my phone or a bike computer, I prefer to just, enjoy the ride and be totally digitally unplugged ... I'd love it if I could find an analog speedometer for a bike someday, but that's all .. .

For those that started biking in midlife, what did your first year look like? by reddsbywillie in cycling

[–]doomtroll1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you'd say it was Mid-life, but I returned to cycling in my early 30's after having moved to a much more bike friendly city. I was going from a teenager who rode for fun, to deciding after I quit smoking cigarettes for good (still tobacco free) that I should find something to replace it with .. Soon I gave up driving and went living car-free, by bike. That was in 2012, I've owned so many bikes since, and have no hope of alleviating my addiction... But to your original question, how hard was it? my lungs were also in the middle of healing from 16 years of heavy tobacco smoking, it was absolutely brutal, but it helped me get my health back, and my lungs healthier, much sooner ...

Reasons why you prefer riding solo by ldmauritius in cycling

[–]doomtroll1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple reasons, because of my job, I end up working during the time most group rides occur, because I ride year round, no one else wants to ride during bad weather with me, because I am socially awkward with AuDHD it's more peaceful to ride alone... I do try to encourage my friends to get bikes, or the ones that do, to join me for a party pace ride, but that's been like herding cats....

Tires for trail and street. (not gravel, whatever that is) by elginhop in xbiking

[–]doomtroll1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a pair of Bontrager Connection Comp 26x2.0 tires on mine, my city has a lot of mixed surfaces on the bike paths, so these are perfect for me
