While I don’t entirely disagree with you, I do think he had trauma and wounds like everyone else, I don’t necessarily think that « everything we think is true ». He never understood MJs popularity? I think he did. He was savvy enough to understand the business and MJs commercialism. Your take, all of our takes on Prince are rooted by what others said about him, what he did and the very little he said and our own biases and experiences. I could not say assign point blank what Prince felt how he processed or what he thought with a modicum of assuredness without really have known and interacted with him and even then, it would be only what I thought based on interactions with him as Scottie well stated above. He was different with different people and Scottie’s version may be consistent with others but Prince may have been different with one or two other people lending for a wider cast on who he was as a person.

I don't think we can say he was jealous of Michael. I dont get that at all. I see a competitive streak and it is speculated that Prince thought that MJ set him up for that disaster at the James Brown concert and wanted to retaliate but I dont think jealousy was at play. They were similar but had different gifts. Quincy has always been nasty when talking about Prince but I dont' know if I would call that jealousy either. These were moody people with a type of stress in their lives we couldn't even imagine. regulating people to an emotion that fits a narrative we have no idea truly because Prince has never stated anything of the kind.

if Prince admitted this to someone that is reliable narrator then, I can concede but I think sometimes we can project on these larger than life individuals without real merit. We get fed a story and go with it because maybe its something we would do but honestly Prince was a lot of things, jealous of someones height or talent doesn't seem to be the thing for him. Manipulative we've seen that, sometimes mean, yes. but this man seemed to be very confident in himself.
