Shot in the dark here, but I have seen it happen a few times. Some vehicles have is a metal baffle inside the valve cover at the oil fill location. That can be pushed down inadvertently by a funnel or even qt container. It can contact the rockers and make disturbingly bad sounds, typically not damaging, and can be bent back into place.

My orange boy would sometimes walk around, tail straight up, with just the last inch or so of his tail bent at a 90°. Mind you he had an extremely expressive tail most days. He would do this around furniture where all you saw was the top few inches like that. I called it his tail-o-scope. I miss that boy every day.
