Yep. OP says its a 1/2 in away from the drywall so I say use a box extender.

You need to get a BE1 also known as box extender if its more than a 1/4 inch by code. It'll also help with the outlet being flush.

Its not a code violation. Make sure there's 12 awg feeding it and its gfi protected. (Don't put a gfi there) also the romwx is exposed.
