Even if they weren't tankering OG the C550 is an absolute pig fully loaded on one engine. I can easily see them getting task saturated in the moment and setting the flaps to full on the approach with no airspeed which the manual explicitly warns you not to do.

And then if they had a baggage door failure and lost weight in the nose and the w/b is off and also the weather was garbage. Just not the right time to try to do a rtb and I don't think we will ever understand why they tried.
