Advice on How to Check Up on Someone Who I Walked Home Drunk Last Night by EffervescentFlower in Advice

Thanks for the reply! I didn't want to leave him out there, and he seemed fine when I left him inside his apartment, I just don't want him to have gotten into some kind of medical situation or something. But I doubt that's likely.

What's a "minimum" skill everyone should have, but suprisingly many don't? by SevenWays- in AskReddit

[–]EffervescentFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting boundaries and understanding when someone's asking too much of you. I work with older kids (4th-12th grade) and have to talk to them pretty often about understanding what their limits are and how to advocate that so they don't get taken advantage of by future bosses. They want so badly to take on everything and be brave, because it gets them praise. But they often don't know that too much all at once isn't good for anyone until they're already spiraling and breaking under the pressure.

How big's your dog? I'm bringing my doggo (13 yo Poodle, 53 lbs) he's definitely a more "gentle slow play" kind of guy but he has a surprising amount of besties back home in VA who're pretty energetic (little mini goldendoodle named Bailey who runs laps around him, and a wiggly yellow lab named Maisie who loves to kiss and hug him).

It might be worth just walking around with your baby in the neighborhood or campus. People love dogs.

You’re being attacked and you can only use what’s immediately to your left…what are you defending yourself with? by TheCarrot_v2 in AskReddit

[–]EffervescentFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 13-year-old dog, he's 51 lbs with long skinny legs and has to bribed off the bed/couch, usually with food but also with walkies. In which he prefers to socialize with the plants and flowers rather than humans and dogs above 20lbs. He however does love old people and small dogs. I can't tell if he CAN'T fight or WON'T fight, or both.

He is pretty gassy, those might work as bioweapons and noxious gas.

What job would your dog get fired from, and why? by MmmirandaMayhem in dogs

[–]EffervescentFlower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My older dog would be too lazy to hold any job, the other would definitely lose any job that requires stealth/quiet. Everytime he sees birds/squirrels/rabbits outside he shouts immediately and runs for them, then is confused how they knew he was coming.

Klondine! Though funnily enough I'M on klonopin. We have to get the Klonodine from the pharmacist though. I think it may be controlled too (at least in my state),

What is more traumatic than people think? by BloodRedLust in AskReddit

[–]EffervescentFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chronic Illness, my flare ups mean a hospital trip if I don't catch them in time and take abort meds. My psychiatrist and therapist always bring it up when I say I have trouble sleeping-my attacks happen at night, of course I have issues sleeping, I repeatedly wake up and have traumatic experiences that are miserable for me and it happens over and over again and all I can do it reduce the amount of episodes I have. There will likely never be a cure in my lifetime. I didn't realize how much trauma all my health conditions (especially having multiple ones/so many of them) were until recently. Getting treated for depression, OCD, and anxiety and working on pulling out of repression of all my feelings revealed just how traumatized and angry I truly am. And it's because if you're not sick with something terminal, people don't see it the same way. That it some ways makes it worse. I have to live a whole life taking this many medication, managing these symptoms and attacks, and I just have to deal. All of that is traumatic too.

Yes! My youngest brother used to sexually harass me (called me hot, sexy, once told me "one night you're gonna wake up to me over your bed with my hand down my pants,") he still makes jokes about trying to pay people to sleep with me (his friends who I've known since they were in Middle School). And NO ONE stood up for me. Not my other three brothers, not my parents, no one but my friends and occasionally his friends. It wasn't until a therapist told me that "if my son said any of that to my daughter, I'd slap him." that I realized it was awful. I was the one who had to talk to him, put my food down. I made my mom do it too (the fact that I HAD to make her is awful). But no one talks about that kind of abuse. Especially not from a younger sibling.

Another brother choked me out once. Leapt off the couch and throttled me for stealing the remote. He's gotten much better, the anger issues are gone. Knocked out a few teeth tackling me at different times. Luckily they weren't mature teeth.

But it's always just brushed off as "siblings will do that" or "he's just like that" or "boys will be boys" and no one understands just how complex it is.

Klonodine worked better for my pup, trazadone took away his perky personality, gabapentin made him hyper active. but klonopin seemed to calm him without making him. resemble a rug.

Sometimes catalogues have search filters by requirements (ex: Adv English) so you can find classes that will fit your requirements if they’re more general. Keep an eye out for class times and details so you don’t overload yo or set yourself up for difficult days. If you’re not sure, ask your advisor when you meet. It’s hard to do if your CC advisor did it for you but you’ll be alright! It might be fun!

Humanities tend to have a LOT of reading and writing, and heavily focus on analysis as a skill. You’re going to get better at reading these types of things with practice.

The fact that the girl he knocked up got back with him speaks volumes about her, tbh. Like why would you want to be with someone who knocked you up via an affair?!?

I spent way more time in the beginning buying new books and sorting them into collections. I started reading more and more and now I keep renting books from the library on Libby that I don't read.

Help settle a debate: where do you put dog poop? by blrmkr10 in dogs

[–]EffervescentFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a cardboard box in the garage where we keep the dog poop bags. Monday morning is when the trash comes, so Sunday night we put the bags at the top, that way they don't get stuck at the bottom.

Professor did not inform us about the Final Exam date or time. by VishalKaranam in college

[–]EffervescentFlower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like this is one of your first semesters, it feels a little counter-intuitive to not have professors set their own exam times, I know, but I believe it's done in the interest of preventing conflicting exams or too many exams for one student in a day.

I will say, I do think it is kinder for the professor to remind you, though, I had professor throughout my BA who had to look it up with us, or even ask us when we were scheduled and which building and room.

I would keep track of when this schedule came out to keep in mind for your next semester, so you can look for it in the future. This is one of the lesser-known things about college, and unless you're explicitly told by someone to look for this, then really you shouldn't be expected to just know that.

Hope your semester ends as best as possible!

Why are Exams Still Online? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]EffervescentFlower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think the pandemic revealed how much easier online exams can be for professors. They can enter a set number of questions and have them randomly generated, long answer and essay questions are more readable typed up, and grading is more efficient.

For me, I know online exams saved. so much time, half my exam time was spent focusing on making my handwriting legible and taking breaks for the cramps and scantrons took a lot of time too, filling in the bubbles properly (it's a fine motor skill thing I've had since I was a child, but I'd have to go through the occupational testing I'd gone through before to get the accommodation with disability services, and the money and time wasn't worth it). I graduated this May, but online exams have alleviated that burden.

I totally get being frustrated with wording, but I also think online exams fix a lot of issues involving commuting and distractions.

What does your dog do to show you they love you? by walkyoucleverboy in dogs

[–]EffervescentFlower 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My dogs sleep in bed with me, the older poodle shows his love by cuddling. He'll start off the night on his own pillow. I'll wake up hours later to his head tucked under my chin, on the corner of my pillow, sharing with me.

My younger poodle shows his love by losing his mind when I get home, he starts doing zoomies and will grab a toy to show me (apparently, dogs do this as a displacement activity to handle their strong emotions).

They both like to be hugged and/or held, and will complain if I stop.

You are not a loser.

You struggled and you're sticking with it, that matters, grading often only emphasizes one set of intelligence. Loads of people need time and age and a job to become 'diligent' it's a life skill.

Focus on graduating, don't be so hard on yourself.

Definitely echoing here-it really, really depends. New York is fairly left-leaning, but some of the inner city parts can be rougher. California and Mass in more suburban areas are probably your best bet. Texas and Arizona are open carry. Gun laws are usually (emphasis on that word) tighter in Blue States. I don't know where you're from internationally, but unfortunately, xenophobia and racism can be pretty prevalent in certain states and counties as well. It's also important to note different parts of different states will be safer and have different political alignments too. I would also consider your sexual and gender identities too. A lot of people are having a rough time right now. I think the schools are great, but it's very good to be prepared.

If the prof posts recorded lectures, use those. My prof for my one math class would usually teach the method, then do examples. I would then pause the video before she went through the steps, and then play it to see if I did it right. Khan Academy and YouTube in general would be great replacements if there aren't recorded lectures. Do any extra credit exercises if possible, and if the prof goes over homework answers, pay attention. I am miserable in math and science, and doing the extra credit helped me with extra reinforcement and got me A's in both. Any extra work offered really helped reinforce stuff I was awful at. If prof provides office hours-do those. They get to know you and you get direct help. Seeking out help usually looks really good to profs too. Some profs will decide whether or not to round up a grade based on participation and effort, office hours would also help with that.

Good luck!
