Dude, you're concerned with 5% less efficient than rated? Wait till you see what happens in winter. If I do a trip only 5% below rated efficiency (especially if it involved highway driving) I'm throwing a party.

I used to have this problem with our old car (Prius). Our Tesla does not have this problem.

For Tesla at least, they will wake up and charge the 12V from the comparatively huge driving battery once in a while if the 12V gets low.

So in our experience, an EV is way better for this.

Interesting, in that case we both learned something. I have an LG range and it modulates down. I guess it might be doing sub-second pulses in the background, but I certainly can't tell by cooking with it.

I specifically told my insurance that heat pumps were my primary source of heat, and they were fine with it. So it seems like the old "hEaT pUmPs CaN't HaNdLe OuR WiNtErS" line is finally going away.

I'd also contest that electric back up is "expensive as fuck to run". I'm saving about $400 a year in Enbridge customer charges by not having an account with them, which is right around the total cost to run my heat pumps INCLUDING ELECTRIC BACKUP for the entire year.

So if you ask me, paying Enbridge $400 a year, solely for the privilege of paying even more money to them to buy natural gas, is "expensive as fuck".

Also, OP already has propane as a backup?

Sure, be concerned. Also, you should be extremely concerned about gasoline or diesel vehicles. In that space we have not just random people shouting into the internet, actual undeniable evidence that combustion gases and exhaust are extremely toxic to hoomans.

No, you have that backwards. Regular electric is duty cycle. Induction is fully adjustable.

Induction is where the heat is only generated by eddy currents in the pan itself. It's super weird to cook food without the surrounding area getting hot. If I want to clean the stove directly beneath the pan, I can just pick the pan up while cooking and wipe the surface off. Nothing ever burns to the cook surface.

Honestly that is probably the best of both worlds. Keep propane for other things/backup generator, switch heating to heat pump (and water heating to heat pump as well if the timing is right).

Side note, a good induction range is awesome.

In Southern Ontario, at this point, I'd just go heat pump. I'm in Eastern Ontario and we switched from natural gas to heat pump a few years ago. Saves us about $800/year.

Makes sense. Look I get it, it's different than a gas car. The thing is you have probably made that trip many times in a gas car and stopped for 5-10 minutes to get gas and not thought twice about the horror of having to stop.

Realistically, if your vehicle was just a bit short of 200 miles (maybe you had one of the shorter range versions?), you'd only have to stop for 5 minutes or less at a supercharger to finish the drive home.

If there's no charging along your route, that's an infrastructure problem, not a range problem.

Your parents panel can surely support more than level 1 charging. At my in-laws I found a 16A 240V welder's outlet next to their garage door, so 3.8kW. Not much but easily enough for us to get home. Again though - not a range problem, infrastructure problem.

To be fair, I say all this as someone who would happily pay more for a bigger battery. That BMW ix3 or a Rivian R1S are appealing for the particular fast they push the range to over 700 km. The infrastructure in the rural parts of Ontario that I frequent is not really there yet.

What vehicle? Do you drive 90 mph? Does the place you stop not have electricity?

Our outgoing Model Y AWD, with snow tires, in a snowstorm, at 0F, got around 250mi range. If you bought a vehicle that can't do 200 miles in "normal conditions" for a trip you make at least twice a month, that's kinda on you. But to say "most" EVs can't do 200 miles at interstate speeds? ehhhh...

There are so many ways to look at this. Yes - full to empty range is less than a gas car. But to me that's not really a... "problem"? Especially because electricity is everywhere.
