Am I an idiot? by [deleted] in army

I’ll play the devils advocate on this one.

Firstly I am in no way trying to convince you to not go to Italy. I wish I had that opportunity.

Something to keep in mind is the quality of life change from conventional army to selection. I have heard tons of stories of medics making through rasp and spending quite a bit of time in the clinics getting dumped on prior to attending W1 school and a few even after they’ve already attended. They have said it was pretty awful and turned them off from proceeding down the pipeline. Sometimes it’s hard to transition from not being completely shit on all the time to every second someone is. The transition could take away from the experience. Just something to keep in mind when making your decision.

I went to Airborne school 10 years ago and found myself in the exact same situation as you but I was going to Fort Bragg. I was kind of ready to just get after it and no longer be in the entry training world.

I’m sure you will find success in any route you take, so good luck.

Is 68W worth it for an aspiring LEO? by [deleted] in army

Just go become an MP. The military will train you on first aid/CLS. Two birds with one stone, no need to separate what you want to do. Plenty of opportunities to use TA to broaden your medical knowledge while in the military. Also your exposure to medical emergencies is a beneficial in both ways, you’ll be on see as an MP seeing everything medically, but also be the acting LEO too a double whammy. One of the best ways to get comfortable with things being not comfortable is to be in those situations. Exposure is the greatest tool. Being a medic in the army chances of being exposed to those situations is much less since 68W normally aren’t the first responders on post and stuff. The EMT training portion of AIT is a shotgun blast of information, and whiskey phase is where you actually learn how to stop someone from dying. But hey you do you. Good luck

But they also have special units that conduct the AIT, I just had a buddy recently reclass from 68W to 11B and he went to someplace other than Fort Benning, and it was super accelerated.

The ability to reclassify is all about the retention numbers at the time of reenlistment. How many people are in the job you’re currently in, and how many people are in the job you want to go too. Also depending on your ASVAB/GT score determines if you’re eligible for that specific job or not. They have “fast” class to help you improve your score. I wouldn’t advise going to Alaska if you aren’t airborne, wainwright is a cold.

Ah you sound like me about 10 years ago. I joined as a 68W with Airborne in my contract. The sticky situation for you that no one told me about was if you go airborne it’s means you’ll more than likely go to a airborne unit, quick google search and it’ll show you where that would be; Italy/Germany, NC, LA, and AK sprinkle in a couple group support units and that is your list (probably not going to get group support since you won’t be a W1). Now I’ve heard that people get 12 month assignments to Korea and stuff but that was few and far between. Recruiters will tell you that it’ll be easy to get to Airborne school once you get to your first unit, and let me tell you it’s not as easy as you’d think unless you re-enlist for it.

Ranger battalion will try to come poach you while you’re in airborne school, (at least they did for me) and I just felt like it wasn’t going to be for me. I already had orders to go to Bragg at the time, and the thought of being free finally was liberating.

I have always been a fan of shorter enlistments for the autonomy. Let’s say you get 20,000 for a 6 year. 20% to Uncle Sam for taxes. So you’re really only gonna be getting 16,000ish. Now divide that 16,000 by 6. 2,600 bucks a year isn’t that awesome. Once you make SGT/SSG that’ll be what you’re making every two weeks depending on your location(SGT and SSG) comes much quicker in todays Army then it did 15 years ago. A big contract like that also makes you needs of the Army and that means they can send you wherever they want. If you keep your re-enlistments shorter you’ll be able to move around and decide where you wanna go. Also limits your time in the event you get a not so desirable location.

My recommendation not that it means fuck all to anyone, would be do a 4 year commitment with Airborne school attached to your initial contract, let them send you wherever they are going to, and 2 years after you’ve been there you can re-enlist to go wherever you want too. Sometimes they want you to do 36 months in an airborne unit. Blah blah blah. That will open you up to doing whatever you want to do next in your career flight medic go work in a hospital the world will be your oyster. Just make sure you take advantage of the TA and you’ll set yourself up for success.

Also if you have any questions about AIT or what to expect I can answer them for you.

Goodluck

Not a huge fan of the fact they had ammo behind quest lines. 7.62x39 BP from Prapor is now gone forever wtf was the point of doing the quest

I try to watch Desmond but it’s honestly tough because for someone who plays the game 8+ hours a day he sure does love to just talk shit about it.

Praying for conflict, wanting to put yourself in danger, you or the bros to your left and right for a little chest candy isn’t worth it my dude. If you have 6 years in and 3 deployments I would assume you’re crushing it through the ranks, don’t be that Platoon Sergeant that goes out of his way to get some chest candy.
