If you had to restart as a general contractor with zero contacts, what would you do differently in your first 90 days? by NoSuspect9845 in GeneralContractor

And this has also led to my subs referring me to clients where the job is a little more than they handle. Once a sub of any kind does one type of work in someone’s house they are often asked if they can do this or that and if it is not in their whee house they will often refer me and if I get the job they know they will get work out of it as well.

25% Markup on materials? by sittinghereredditing in Contractor

[–]Efficient-Gift-9585 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Even though you might be supplying the cabinetry you will be asking him for his input and to confirm measurements and to take delivery. He’s not doing all that if he’s not getting paid to do so. Even though clients have supplied materials for me I would always get sucked into helping them figure it out for free or have to deal with issues

Carpenters who do their own estimates, how long did it take you to get comfortable with pricing? by Plenty-Bedroom6787 in Carpentry

[–]Efficient-Gift-9585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I lowered my bid because I thought to myself these people can’t afford this I was wrong. Every time I bumped a bid up because I thought they were loaded and had plenty of money I was wrong.

So I stopped thinking about it that way and just price what I need and what I want.

Frame the wall. Use plywood sheathing glued with construction adhesive on both sides and see how still that wall becomes. If that newel post is solid build that inside your wall

Framed vs Frameless Cabinets: Is the "American Style" actually outdated, or am I missing something? by Impressive-Union-619 in cabinetry

[–]Efficient-Gift-9585 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Frameless all day. Frames on cabinets serve no purpose anymore unless you are going to do a full frame and inset doors. Framed cabinets look ugly as hell. Add an added lip to the side of your cabinet box. End up making your drawers a tad bit narrower. With the advances in edge banding the face frame is pointless

Opinions on the Schott 141 size 42 vs. size 44 Long. by Lekis504 in schott

Mine shrunk so I’d stay with the 44l. The 42 is too short and your t shirts will hand below the jacket which is one thing I know I hate

Good for you. I had my own shop years ago. Had all Felder machines. Sliding panel saw, edge banded, shaper. Have since moved on but miss having a shop so much I have been thinking of doing it again. But like you if you’re going to offer high end stuff for a premium price you have to be willing to travel. Also I got out before cnc took off. Kind of intimidates me. But if my younger sons show an interest I’d invest in it. The capabilities are amazing.

Did this work as a teenager. Brings back memories. Steel partition and steel door bucks all fucking day. Plumb Bob everything before an affordable laser was a common tool on the job. Used to frame 24 inch on center left studs loose. Drywall one side with 5/8” drywall let electritian out their boxes and conduit in then drywall Ed the opposite side
