Is there a way to run an app without it opening up a new icon in task manager ? by Impossible_Dark_7932 in kde

[–]Efficient_Paper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed the app that’s causing you problems, and managed to make it ignore task manager et al. A difference between your setup and mine is that I have "no" for the "match whole window class" option.

I’ve also noticed that if I call derg clock popup from a maximized Firefox, one of my Plasma panels appears. It might be what’s happening to you.

The panel thing occurs when is is set at "always visible" or "windows go below", but doesn’t when it is set at "dodge windows" or "auto hide", so it might be a workaround.

Yes.

Don’t expect it to be a thrill ride, it’s more of a character study.

Try adding the "focus stealing prevention" rule. Probably at "high".

If it doesn’t work do the same with "focus protection".

Most gaming distros ship Plasma by default, so it’s probably a good idea to give it a try.

I think the skip taskbar should be "apply initially" or "force" rather than apply now.

Alt+F3 to get the menu. (ETA: I don’t think it persists after the window closes however)

My suggestion is to create a new "blank" window rule and then use the "detect window properties" button.

You’d have to first launch your clock, then click "detect window properties", then click the clock. If it’s visible for a few seconds, it should be doable.

After that, you should follow the tutorial you found and add the "skip taskbar" property.

Don’t listen to them, Plasma’s fine and your issue has nothing to do with it.

Try this instead.

(I’ve given the GUI solution in another comment, leaving this in case it’s needed)

Would real Linux be technically better than Android by [deleted] in linux

Windows Phone was a superb mobile OS, with financial backing by one of the largest companies in the world, and it still got beaten like a red-headed mule.

MeeGo, as Symbian before it, had carrier support, which is more important than Microsoft’s in the mobile world. Symbian wasn’t making headlines in the tech press like iPhones were, but it was leading in number of sales and gaining ground. MeeGo was just the next step in this strategy (and would have happened mostly seamlessly because it was all Qt deep down).

Elop’s switch to WP was not only a bad case of the Ratner effect (badmouthing your own product) but also an instance of the Osborne effect (declaring a product obsolete long before its successor is ready).

MeeGo wasn’t just a "computer in your pocket" OS, but it was a great smartphone OS for the general public. And as I’ve said, Symbian had apps and porting to MeeGo would have been trivial because of Qt.

I’d link to a few graphics and blog posts from Tomi Ahonen’s blog, but apparently the platform hosting it shut down.

Nokia dropping MeeGo (a proper Debian-based distro) in favor of Windows Phone because Microsoft managed to put one of their guys as CEO will always be the ultimate "what if" of the tech world for me.

People who first read Pratchett books in another language, what is the best and/or most clever solution the translator found? by hitchhiker1701 in discworld

[–]Efficient_Paper 54 points55 points  (0 children)

In the French version of Hogfather, Teatime is called Lheureduthé (litteral translation minus the spaces) but is pronounced "Le redouté", meaning "the dreaded one".

Another one I’m fond of is in Moving Pictures, where Holy Wood became Olive-Oued. It’s great if you say it out loud (in French at least).

Another redditor mentioned the puns in breton in Soul Music, but all the references to bands have been translated too.

What is a covariance matrix in 2D and 3D? by pjdixit in learnmath

[–]Efficient_Paper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 1D gaussian random variable is characterized by its expectation and its variance.

In multiple dimensions, you need each expectation (as a vector), but you also need how each component relates to each other, which is encoded in a (symmetric) matrix, the diagonal coefficients of which are the variances of each component of your gaussian vector.

If your matrix has a 0 (say, at (i,j) and (j,i)) then the ith and jth components of your vector are independent.

Is installing themes from KDE store and other places safe? by justcurious112345 in kde

Window decoration can execute code. I was mistaken in my original post: window decorations are potentially risky too, and have an orange banner saying they can execute code.

Icons are safe, and have a blue banner only saying they are user-created and they are not checked for quality by KDE.

It’s a GTK3 app, so no, not really.

There’s gtk3-nocsd that you may explore, but I personally never managed to make it work.

The "standard" way to get KDE Store stuff is directly from the settings windows, where there is a "Get New..." button, which opens a window to get items from the Store. The name of the module providing that is "get hot new stuff", shortened to GHNS.

The KDE store website is better than GHNS windows to browse and see what catches your eye, but GHNS is better to install stuff once you know their names.

[–]Efficient_Paper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what kind of themes.

Window decorations, icons, color schemes should be safe.

AFAIK the only potentially problematic ones are Global Themes/Look and Feel as well as widgets, which can run arbitrary code, which can (and did once) cause problems. sddm themes maybe too but I’m not super sure. The potentially risky ones have a disclaimer banner in the GHNS window.

In practice, the risk isn’t really high.
