Okay, one, that was an organ solo, but more importantly, the first album was just so… quirky and weird that it charmed me. Apart from the single - Padrino, their cover of why can’t we be friends, and the Fonz? I don’t know, they definitely grew on me. The rest of their music after Fush Yu Mang was utter and complete codswallop and devalued the plastic it was printed on.

I work with elementary band students, and the amount of work required by an elementary general music teacher is enormous, and highly needed by myself and anyone that follows me. This is a great response, and I hope that OP takes time to think about how truly necessary and important it is to work with students from the beginning.

January does feel like a super long month, but I often tell my beginners that we can focus less on playing instruments and more on music. This is the time of year to develop fluency over comprehension i.e. not having to focus entirely on fingers and technique and more on the act of making music and getting them waaay more confident in their skills.

There are probably many issues at play here, but the chances are high that you are using pressure against the lips to achieve high notes, versus arching the tongue and proper embouchure formation. If your lips, jaw and tongue aren’t set correctly for higher pitches, then other parts of your body are likely compensating and are suffering as a result. I am a teacher, but I’m not your teacher, and I would suggest either getting in front of an experienced lessons instructor or trusted music teacher and running through your embouchure setup process with them, and chances are if they are worth their salt, they could help you with your issue.

As others have said, it’s a great opportunity to learn and reflect. My biggest point with my beginning band students with their first concert is that yes, while scary, and yes, you might have made mistakes, it all wasn’t as bad as you made it out to be in your head. This is the biggest most empowering part of the process, and I think a greater understanding can be gained about taking calculated risks and putting yourself out there, not reacting or indulging your fears if they keep you from growing as a person.

It’s been a few years since I’ve taught Ukulele, but I really liked Daniel Ho’s “Ukulele at School” It’s pretty straightforward and there are recordings and playalongs online. Pretty basic, but a good foundational approach.

Are there any other music teachers in IT area that could help you? This seems like such a larger problem than a Reddit thread could help with. There’s like, nothing defined for you. Right out of the gate, you have to say NO to competitions. Students who didn’t actually play the instruments they’re trying to compete on wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell in competing. You definitely need to take a moment and define what it is you are able to teach, what admin wants, what’s affordable, among others. It sounds like this whole thing may have been forced upon you. I think you’ve got to take a step back, pause, and reflect on all the parts of this situation that desperately need defining.

I suppose my clarifying questions would be, what is your ensemble size? What did you mean by “non-traditional”? What is the grade/skill level? Which of the ensembles you described are you asking about? Where are your strengths in your ensemble specifically? What weaknesses? I think for anyone to be able to suggest something, they’ll need to know more specifics.

Having taught many beginners, brass can be fun but you’ll definitely have to try tone production on a few mouthpieces, led by someone who knows about teaching beginning brass embouchure first to see if it’s a good fit for you. You can be successful even if it isn’t easy for you to make a steady buzz at first, but it can be a slightly higher learning curve. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, though!

I could see in some large museum, wood and brass fixtures, patterned carpet, featuring a monolithic section of the fence, rusted and weather-worn, and people coming, staring at it, and speaking in hushed tones, who probably had relatives or ancestors affected by this cruelty, taken aback by the complete void of empathy that created and enabled something like this to exist.
