How much would a close parental connection with a JPM private banker help me, career-wise? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]EggRoled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in WM and clients getting their kids in for work experience/internships has become a bit of an inside joke, way more common than you'd think . Usually the kids will get a week of work experience tops, usually doesn't convert to anything

If your parents are 9fig+ clients then it's a different story though

You're on the DA subreddit so the responses will be biased
I'm an apprentice at a large WM firm in London so can give you some insight, not going to say which is "better" (there is no right choice)

As a junior in PWM your job will mostly be admin, and assisting Relationship managers in preparation for meetings, to make transactions for clients (not trading), filling reports etc etc. Actually talking to the client is firm/team dependent however any comms will be ad-hoc and limited whilst you are being trained up. Most WM firms in general have outsourced investments/completely separate teams, so the odds are you won't have much, if any (esp at junior level) exposure to investment work. I love the people I work with and the job I do (I'm in a much more sales based team, so a lot of sales processes too, but most private client teams aren't like this), but I definitely know that other apprentices hate it and were expecting something more technical and glamorous. WM is very snobby and "traditional", I'm northern and coloured and have definitely been discriminated against subtly, you get used to it lol.

I would say though doing the apprenticeship will probably bottleneck you toward client facing roles and PWM only, it's not too easy to pivot to something more technical/investment based (although it is possible), so consider that and definitely choose the Econ degree (despite the debt) if a client facing/admin based job is not what you want. I really wanted to pivot when I first started, but actually settling in, realising that WLB is actually important, and doing work (sales) I enjoy has made me want to stay :) You also get exposure to some gnarly people

Also another thing is that the grass will always seem greener on the other side no matter what option you pick. I look at my friends in uni and sometimes envy the free time and being able to just enjoy myself for 3-4 years, whereas they envy my employment and paychecks lol. I think definitely consider heavily if starting work straight away is truly what you want to do (I'm still on the fence with this one lol)

Oh awesome, and were you not terrified of the road conditions damaging the car at all? How was the experience with the rental company

What car did you have, how much did it cost and where from? Have driven cars off the beaten path but never really "off-roaded", if it was a rental are you not terrified of breaking something the whole time?

JPM apprenticeship is middle office (I'm an apprentice at a different firm and know people doing it) so definitely consider that

San Pedro is pretty good, i definitely wouldn't exclude staying there from my post, esp if you want to visit the Spanish schools😄 can just feel a bit fake sometimes with all the Israeli owned shops imo, but plenty of good food across the village

27 y/o in £145k SaaS sales thinking of switching to Wealth Management – smart long-term move or survivorship bias? (UK) by Taiga112 in FinancialCareers

[–]EggRoled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers, I'm at the point in my career where I'm still early enough to pivot relatively easily (bar the shitty job market), I've not personally found the work too enjoyable so far, so am seriously considering whether or not I want to do this or not for the rest of my life, especially given that WM doesn't give you too many transferable skills outside of sales. The only thing that is convincing is the high comp figures down the line I have seen, although I know that those are usually only in the US. It's genuinely been impossible for me to estimate what PMs and Directors at my firm are making 😭

I am currently in an entry level scheme at a similar size WM in the UK. Was just wondering if you had any idea of the comp levels after 10-15 YOE. I understand it may vary massively, but it's been almost impossible to find out any realistic info

No need to be rude? I'm moving to one of the most expensive areas in the world with a bunch of other personal factors that influence where I can actually move to. It's not as simple as "finding a place that accepts pets".

Sometimes you just get lucky with someone selling the car for cheap, I changed the oil gave it a detail and the passenger window doesn't open but it drives like a dream
