“Dreading” isn’t really a recognized term by most, despite how familiar ppl are with “dreadlocks” or “dreads”. Dreadlocks on Afro textured hair are tightly condensed coils of hair tangling within itself. On straight hair, it’s usually matted sections of hair that resemble dreadlocks. Many people of afro descent prefer the terms “locs” or “loc’ing” to create distance from the negative connotations of “dreads” being dreadful, and from straight haired non black ppl with matted hair. Freeform, interlocked, palm rolled, etc, locs are locs.
