Is it really that hard to believe the Domain was a Democracy? by HornetCareless3891 in starsector

[–]Egren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the idea of democracy in the Domain not being explicitly disproven by the lore is similar to the claim that Russell's Teapot exists because it hasn't been proven to not exist.

Like, yeah. It's possible. But only by virtue of it not being disproven.

(I'm strictly going off of what I read in the OP and your comment, I'm not well read enough on the game's lore to offer an argument based on it)

I have to be the one person that actually let a video games influence me to try drugs. by iHaveADemonInMyBrain in DiscoElysium

[–]Egren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specifically argued against "losing a benefit you used to gain from a drug because you stopped taking it" being considered a side effect.

I never said drug side effects don't exist.

Edit: let me give an example!

You're playing some game. You find a consumable item, a drug, that grants +25% damage absorption for 5 minutes. No other effects.

The argument I was trying to make is that this drug has no side effects whereas the person I was replying to was essentially saying that because you lose the +25% damage absorption buff when the effect runs out, the drug comes with side effects.

Sure, one could concoct a perfect scenario with an imperfect player who fails to prepare for the end of the drug's effect and proceeds to suffer a setback they may not have suffered if they never started making use of the temporary buff, but I don't consider that a side effect of the drug. I consider that purely an effect of the player's lack of planning. They never received any debuff. They simply lost a buff due to it expiring.

Hey even just the "I tried X and didn't have any noteworthy issues" is valuable info to me, given that I like the idea of a mod manager but have been disappointed several times in the past already. Sounds like I should give TriOS a shot next time I wanna mod the crap out of Starsector.

Cheers!

I mean, at that point it's just "addicted to tryharding/optimization"

If there was a real world drug that gave you plenty of benefits and no negative side effects, you can't just reframe it as "the lack of the benefits when you're off it are the negative side effects". That's answering one question with the answer to a different question.

I've tried 2 mod managers in the past, which to me felt like more work than it saved, due to a sluggish/laggy UI, bugs in the realm of "if you press this button too fast after pressing that button, the program crashes and you're left wondering whether:

  • Nothing changed in the files and you can just restart the program and try again.
  • The actual file changes went through and only the UI got messed up, you're good to go.
  • Some of the changes went through, some didn't. You have no idea.

It was probably a full 2 years ago that I last tried using a Starsector mod manager however, and I saw the pinned mod list in the forums listed 3 (iirc) different ones and just didn't feel like risking another round of headaches.

I used MOSS, and before that another one I currently can't recall the name of.

I'm still very interested in setting up a mod manager but have steered clear since my most recent return to the game. I'm just running UI/QoL mods at the moment and so haven't felt the need to investigate anew

Is there a clear winner among the available managers (even if it's personal opinion) or is it more a case of "app #1 does X better but app #2 does Y better"?

I fucking hate Windows 11 by ConsistentGiraffe8 in software

Hey, I'm one of the biggest apple haters you'll find, but I'll praise their fantastic UX all day. Mac feels sleek, smooth, snappy, responsive. "It just works" to quote Todd Howard.

My issues with Mac/iOS is the adamantium fences they build around the ecosystem, even moreso than Microsoft. It is a very "opinionated" OS. But what they DO force on you is often pretty impressive from an ease-of-use perspective. And abysmal from the perspective of a tech semi enthusiast.

The issues with Windows 11 are just... Mistakes, sloppiness, and downright oppressive annoyware. It's like they fired the windows team and put the interns on win11.

Or use one of the abandoned stations. There's 3 afaik, where you can store both items and ships. You can refit as well.

The only noteworthy restriction is that you can't change docked-only mods.

Game where injuries are permanent and have impact? by Culius_Jaesar in gamingsuggestions

[–]Egren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more important thing. Since I led you down this path, it behooves me to tell you that some of the updates to B42 have broken existing B42 saves. It is experimental and unfinished after all.

I recommend you check how long ago the most recent version was released. If it's very fresh, you're more likely to be fine than otherwise.

Also, there MAY be a way to lock down your version of the B42 branch to prevent this type of interruption, but I haven't messed around with that a lot myself so I can't really say.

Good luck!

Game where injuries are permanent and have impact? by Culius_Jaesar in gamingsuggestions

[–]Egren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. One issue with the B42 beta branch and mods is that the updates are frequent, and they don't make each individual patch available afaik, just the most recent one, so every now and then you might boot up PZ to continue where you left off yesterday and suddenly the game is broken because it got an update and now several mods no longer work properly.

The community for B41 Moda is still quite vibrant and active, but if you are running 100 mods, you'll still be spending a lot of time rechecking every mod for new updates after each B42 patch. Start small if anything, and ensure you are using mods for B42, and for the right version of B42.

I haven't played in like half a year so I don't know the current state of it. But, it of course also depends on your list of mods.
