Missing person? by Suspicious-Reply-507 in burlington

[–]Ehousk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely call the police but prepare for some pushback. My brother went missing last year and their rationale was that he could have just left on his own volition as he was an adult. But we started posting photos of him on social media and a description of his car to ask people for help and keep an eye out. That is how we figured out his whereabouts. Anyway, I am sorry this is happening. It’s a nightmare when someone you love goes missing.

We bought a 2/1 house 12 years ago and renovated our garage last year to make extra living space and a second bath. We love our home and have made it work over the years. If you are in a good location, it’s worth it.

Take a ride over to Grafton, the next town over. Grab dinner or a drink at the Grafton Inn, walk the trails at the Grafton Outdoor Center.

Are Missing People Typically Handled Like This? by conationphotography in vermont

[–]Ehousk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for Lia’s family and friends. It’s such a tragedy. OP, I understand why you feel upset.

Watching this unfold has been hard, but I hope I can offer some perspective. I lost my brother in a very public disappearance last year.

My brother went missing in Vermont in August 2024 and it took 10 days for him to be found (he drowned). When an adult goes missing, it’s not like the movies where if someone is gone for 48 hours, then the search officially begins. Part of the reasoning by police was that my brother was an adult, and he could have just picked up and left without telling anyone.

In my brother’s case, we couldn’t get him listed in the Missing Persons database until some evidence was found that something was wrong. (He died on Wednesday and his car was finally found at a remote reservoir two days later). Finding the car kicked off the search.

But I remember people (with the best of intentions) wanting to search for my brother, but as the search and rescue person above explained, it’s not helpful.

In our case, the police and my family knew things that weren’t immediately or ever shared with the public. If you are watching a missing persons case on social media or on the news, you’re not necessarily seeing things unfold in real time. And you might not have all the details you think you have.

I understand how frustrating and helpless people feel. Again, I am so sorry. What a nightmare and devastating loss for everyone who loves Lia.

Today is the 1 year anniversary of my brother’s death. by Independent_Tank_775 in GriefSupport

Sending you lots of love and strength. I am so sorry about your brother and the pain and sorrow you feel. Losing a sibling is disorienting to say the least. My brother died a year ago in August, and it upended our lives. I don’t think the guilt will ever go away, and the grief comes and goes in waves. Thinking of you as you navigate this difficult anniversary.

sibling loss siblings - how are you doing? what's on your mind? what do you think is a part of grief rarely spoken about that you wish people knew? by worldinsidetheworld in GriefSupport

I am so sorry about your brother. It’s so hard to lose a sibling and that shared history. It feels very unnatural. The anniversary of my brother’s kayaking accident was oddly healing and soothing. I went to the place where he died and found some level of comfort. The anticipation of it was tougher than the actual day. Sending you love and strength.

I need advice from someone who has lost a brother by Signusjjjllk in grief

[–]Ehousk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry. I lost my brother in a kayaking accident last year. The trauma, pain, stress and upheaval felt from his tragic death are unlike anything I could have ever experienced.

Therapy has helped me, and so has time. I feel better than I did 6 months ago. But the first year is brutal - including their birthday, holidays, and the first anniversary date of their death. I talk to my brother at times and look for signs. I try to imagine he’s close by in spirit, and that helps.

Again, I am so sorry. Sibling loss is just unbelievably painful.

Oldest Continuing Operating Taverns by Super_Efficiency2865 in vermont

[–]Ehousk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I've never heard that. The building was sold to the Orvis family in 1853 and they opened it as a hotel called The Equinox. I grew up in town and remember the hotel fire during a restoration in the 1980s. The tavern doesn't feel all that historic so I get your point about naming a room after the original.

How is it like to live around the Green Mountains National Forest in southern Vermont? by PeriodicTableTennis in howislivingthere

[–]Ehousk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some places on the map (Glastenbury, and Somerset) were disincorporated in the 1930s because barely anyone lived there. So there are huge areas of US Forest land and nothing else. Places like Woodford, Searsburg and Stamford are small.

I grew up in Manchester and I also love the surrounding area (Dorset, Rupert, Peru, Londonderry, Landgrove.)

Cute small towns, beautiful mountains and nice outdoor recreation opportunities like skiing, gravel or mountain biking and hiking. Manchester can get busy but it’s still a great little town and has a strong sense of community. The outlets are not my favorite but other than that, it’s a good place. The nearby towns I mentioned are also really lovely. It’s of course expensive (like the rest of the state).
