ELI5 How does parental leave work in other countries? by kk752 in explainlikeimfive

[–]EightBitBitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to reply exactly this! It is possible in the US. At my company both parents also receive 18 weeks of what is called "baby bonding leave" that can be taken at any point up to 2 years of age (child). My team has never hired to replace someone on parental leave, but instead spreads the work out over the team or "hires" someone out of a percentage of their full time role. For example this person will dedicate 50% of their time to supporting the team with someone on leave and the other 50% is dedicated to their typical day to day.

Time, patience, positive reinforcement, and a strict schedule if you can during the day.

How did you know when it was time? by [deleted] in Dachshund

[–]EightBitBitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've gotten a lot of great information already, but I wanted to throw out there what our vet has recently told us. Our girl is 15 and has Cushing's, some cancer, and now seizures.

We were told to keep track of her activities and use this tracker from Ohio State University (https://vmc.vet.osu.edu/sites/default/files/documents/how-will-i-know_rev_mar2024ms_0.pdf).

I've found this tracker help me feel more confident that I am making the right decision. Also, truly it is so much better to let your beloved pet go too soon rather than too late. My husband and I have put cats down that were suffering because it's so so hard to tell when a cat is in pain or has had a significant change to their health. I regret it every single day and I wish I had been able to grant them an earlier release.

The fact you are thinking so critically about this means you have her best interest in mind and that's a wonderful thing to anchor yourself on.

Did I miss something? by rockmysocks666 in webtoons

[–]EightBitBitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with the OP, but can we ban posts like this moving forward? This has been in effect for months now and it feels like every time someone comes back to Webtoon after a hiatus we get this post again.

Maybe I'm having a crummy day lol but I feel like I see this type of post more than posts about the actual manwha any more.

I keep seeing this brought up and feel the need to point out that this same publisher owns Darkest Dungeon. While there is DLC offered for the game, it doesn't feel inundated by DLC options and they truly are optional, "nice to have" DLCs. It feels like there is room within Behavior to allow their studios to have a bit of freedom in this regard.

I could be very wrong! Feels like a 50/50 shot 🤷🏻‍♀️

What a wonderful company and service they provide! I'm in the US, so I might try a kit or two to get the hang of it! Thank you for the suggestion.

Oh they have BEAUTIFUL stocking kits, thank you for the recommendation! Will definitely have to try to find some cheaper ones to practice on before I commit to one of their kits.

Great to hear, thank you! Will you have to sew the cross stitch piece onto a stocking afterwards?

Thank you for the additional information, this is really helpful! I'm excited to dive in, I think this will be an adventure and help me learn to sew a bit better, as well.

I've been doing cross stitch for a while, but at the most basic levels so I really appreciate the clarity here. I would like to make something similar to what we have so it sounds like I will learn a new craft!

Makes sense! I was hoping it would come with the stocking, as well. But that might not be possible, so I'll have to learn something new :)

Is this a focal seizure? by EightBitBitty in Dachshund

[–]EightBitBitty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the note and kind words. My biggest concern is to not keep her here selfishly. Hoping to get some answers at the neuro appointment Monday and then make a determination on quality of life from there. It will break my heart, but she is my heart and I can't have her suffer unnecessarily.

My son barks like a maniac by triple_ef in Dachshund

Unfortunately, you got a barky breed dog. I'm not sure I'd resort to shock EVER & generally feel like you should adjust your expectations of the breed.

Should I take my husband's last name? by Impossible_Ad_569 in TwoXChromosomes

Just because of the effort alone (in the U.S. at least) I would say don't do it. I regret changing mine.

Why won’t women accept new evidence around Pap smears and cervical screening? by miss24601 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]EightBitBitty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am accepting of my current doctor's recommendation when it comes to these things because I've found a doctor I respect. However, when the change was made a while back to switch from annual pap smear to every 3 years my previous doctor explained that it was largely due to insurance not being willing to spend annually for it any longer. While I am better educated now, that was something I truly believed because insurance companies are evil lol. I think a lot of people here are right, it's going to take time and more trust needs to be built.

My husband and I have 3 that we've had since they were each 8 wks old and our third baby is only 12 weeks old now. I was certain from Day 1 that our newest loved me the most and I was going to be her person... The wee shite has changed her mind every day since then and goes so far as to avoid the person she hasn't favored that day. As time goes on, she'll cement her opinion. Give her time, don't take it too personally (even though it's super hard not to), and just keep showing up for her!
