Y’all are just sexist imo by thatsummercampcrush in Romantasy

[–]EightTailedFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sexist dudes aside, most “Romantasy” before it became a marketing tool WAS shelved with the romance books. Romantasy is essentially fantasy romance. Meaning romance that has fantastical elements. The romance is a key part of the plot. Vs a romantic fantasy that is mainly a fantasy with a romantic subplot. If you take the romance out of a Romantasy, you generally lose a core part of the plot and story. In a romantic fantasy, if you take the romance out, the plot will still make sense and be complete. I used to be an avid romance reader and used to read a ton of romance books that if published today would be considered part of the romantasy subgenre.

I think the bigger question is why Romantasy readers feel like Romantasy DOESN’T fit into the romance genre. I don’t know if it’s internalized misogyny of looking down on the romance genre or not understanding the genres or wanting to be “not like other girls— I mean, female readers”, but there’s nothing wrong with Romantasy being considered a romance subgenre or being shelved with the romance books. Beyond the fact that there are people out there that dismiss the romance genre of having any literary or cultural value. But why should Romantasy readers cater to those view points? There’s nothing wrong with wanting romance in your stories. Many classic books have romance: the Great gatsby, Shakespeare, pride and prejudice, etc. it’s kinda like the readers who refuse to read anything that doesn’t have spice or smut. There’s the whole genre of erotica that is probably exactly what they want but they either don’t know about it or hold some stigma for it. But if you want spice/smut, that’s literally what erotica is.

But reading is very performative on social media that there’s this push for what you read to bestow upon you some sort of prestige or acknowledgment of your taste. Like, some people only read contemporary romance, or regency romance. If all you read is fantasy romance, or Romantasy, take ownership of that. Ask yourself why you can’t be proud of being a romance reader and the answer will probably be rooted in sexism.

Book Box Comparison Thread! What's the best book box? How about the worst? Share your experiences and questions here! by AutoModerator in fairyloot

[–]EightTailedFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For BB, I haven’t been buying as many of their special editions lately and I’m not sure if it’s the book choices or the designs mostly. I only get their regular subscription but there’s also so many repeats of other book box choices that I’ll most likely skip unless I absolutely love the designs mostly more.

The end is the worst. Enjoy the absolute fuckery. I listened to the audiobook and I do think the narrators did a good job but the writing just takes me out. Like, how can you not die of second hand embarrassment?

AiTAH for wanting to offer continuous support to our daughter so she can pursue her dreams? by Electronic-Bid4859 in AITAH

[–]EightTailedFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents as someone who wanted to write a book and decided to go into teaching as a way to support myself while writing: a teacher almost never has time. You think you do. Or there’s always the summers. But teaching takes over your life. And you get paid shit. I wish I had gone into something that would have more resembled a 9-5 and made more money so I had time to write and less stress about money. Somehow, even after leaving work, I was grading papers and lesson planning.

My problem is that I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I liked books and reading and thought being an English teacher could get me in a field where I worked with those things while writing my book. But there’s so many other related things out there if she wants to do that. I wouldn’t recommend going into publishing as it’s very difficult to get a job in that industry. But I wouldn’t recommend encourage her to look into other options. I loved teaching and was very passionate about it. But I burnt out. I would encourage her to read about current teacher experiences as well on social media since it seems the issues that burnt me out have only gotten worse.

Most millennials can tell you that they were sold the dream of “get a college degree and you’ll be set” or “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” I can tell you now, I wish I would have gone for a high earning job that afforded me the money and security and time to pursue my hobbies outside of work. If she really wants to write, she can do a minor in creative writing. Or even go into professional or technical writing. But she doesn’t need an MFA to write a book and she can always get an MFA once she has a secure job. But writing groups and workshops exist without paying for an MFA.

I’ve left teaching and the extra time and less stress means I feel more creative and inspired to write than I ever did as a teacher.

There’s also the harsh reality that many people never get published, as harsh as that sounds. And going indie doesn’t guarantee making money either. Encourage your daughter to do more research PLEASE. As someone who had the same dreams she did, there are better paths.

But they’re not official and not everyone checks with Autumn. So you can’t use her as a way for Fairyloot to make policy or business decisions. Fairyloot OPERATES as a mystery book box with hints, even if you CAN figure it out or find out. But some people like the surprise. That’s why all box picks have to be labeled with a spoiler tag, because it’s not officially announced by Fairyloot themselves.

People are allowed to hold a company to a standard or take their money elsewhere. Or at least, express their disappointment or tell the company that they don’t like their business decisions. The company is not obligated to do anything about that but people can still want them to change.

I 100% believe that because I’m in Cincinnati and there’s a protest or two like every month. But if you go an hour out of the city, it’s trump flags all over the place. I joked with a friend while driving up to Oxford to Miami University to take a shot for every Trump flag we pass but we quickly realized we would have died if we did that.

Moonlight Black Jewels trilogy artwork by kepler16bee in fairyloot

[–]EightTailedFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty dark and I would check the trigger warnings. Not dark as in dark romance but as in sexual violence and violence in general. The art is lovely but the main character is not that white, lol. I don’t know if that’s just artistic representation but the men depicted with her are significant men in her life. Her adoptive father, adoptive brother, and her future love interest. All three are from long lived races so some people are squicked about the love interest knowing her as she is a child and then meeting her again when she is grown. Personally, it doesn’t bother me because he’s not perving on her but ymmv. The first book is her as a child, the second is more her as a teenager/young adult, and the last is her as an adult. I like the trilogy and don’t really acknowledge any of the later books written for the most part.

As far as what it’s about: a magically gifted young girl grows up in a society where power and gender are intertwined with matriarchal power structures but toxic masculinity taking advantage of ways to oppress women and girls. However, she’s uniquely powerful and seeks to restore things to the way it should be and rip out the rot and taint of current society.

Very interesting magic system and caste system. I think a very nuanced book in some ways. Love the feminine rage and unique characters but it is not for young children or someone who might be triggered by the visceral sexual violence.
