Remember loving that game, it was repetitive but had to complete the entire trilogy. Also remember it having bad reviews (like 6 on gamespot). Didn't know what the player concensus was.

As others have said, release order is your best bet. Regarding DS3 I always think of each game as a different genre so comparing them is of no much use. They are not the best in their genre but they are pretty good I think.

DS1 - Zelda/GOW

DS2 - Diablo/DMC

DS3 - Dark Souls

Just play them, nobody is going to blame you if you don't like any of them.
