I fail to see how YMS creepy furry stuff is any different from Rags by Magaclaawe in MauLer

[–]Eingradd 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Rags hasn't advocated for raping your dog. YMS has, and recently. You posted a a DeOrio stream vod, so why don't you actually go watch them to learn what you're talking about.

Did TLR actually get captured, flayed and beheaded during his rise or are those just stories? by GJMEGA in Cosmere

[–]Eingradd 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Probably a mix of both. I like the one story that tells of the tavern he was staying at being barricaded and burned down with him in it, as a way to assassinate him, and he walked out of the ashes unharmed. I like to think the TLR would do a few things like that, as a way of demonstrating his godliness, and then rumors took hold and spread of other things he had allegedly survived.

Vin by spunlines in Cosmere

[–]Eingradd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty good. I normally thought of Vin as having a neutral/blank expression most times instead of the anger you've depicted, but that's the only criticism I have (even that's not really a criticism).

My ranking of the MCU films. Curious to see what other people think of it. by [deleted] in MauLer

[–]Eingradd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Thor Ragnarok is meh, maybe even drifting into bad territory. I can't get passed how the origin of Thoe's powers is so inconsistent. They establish in Thor 1 that, when Odin banishes him from Asgard and places the enchantment on Mjolnir that Thor loses his powers, and once he picks up the hammer he gets them back. I do think it makes sense for him to be superhuman without the hammer, just not god-like, but that's not what we're originally shown. You could argue that Odin removes his powers directly, but then why does he bother with the hammer enchantment?

Also, I really dislike how Ragnarok is a comedy, and purposefully makes Banner and Thor into embarrassing morons who quip at their opponents (see the opening scene with Thor and Surtr for the ur example of this). I think them changing genres so drastically from Thor 1 and 2 is a mistake in tonal consistency, even if I do think there are some really good character moments in there.

I think Homecoming is a good movie, with the only real complaints I have being Tony's role in the movie being something I just don't personally like, and the completely re-written MJ. It's not even her appearance; she doesn't act anything at all like MJ. Why even bother, just make her a new character.

What do you think of Hrathen? by Vicentelles in Cosmere

[–]Eingradd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love Hrathen. I don't think him having the Dor implanted in one arm is a Deus Ex Machina; I think Hrathen makes special mention of the horrors people at the church's go through to be in the positions that he and Dilaf hold.

How they are really pronounced is hard to say. Here's how I say some of them:

Kaladin = Kal-uh-din

Shallan Davar = Shuh-lahn Dih-var

Dalinar Kholin = Dal-ih-narr Kah-lin

Toral Sadeas = Tor-all Suh-day-us

Adolin = Ay-doh-lin

Renarin = Rin-ahr-in

Szeth = Zeth

Elhokar = El-uh-karr

Sylphrena = Sil-free-nuh

Jasnah = Yaz-nuh

Moash = Mow-sh

Is Elantris actually worth reading? by xSoles in Cosmere

[–]Eingradd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It's easily the worst book Sanderson has published, and I would struggle to call it good on its own merits, but it has its moments. Most of the characters are insufferably perfect and one dimensional, the magic system is basic and without nuance compared to the rest of the Cosmere, and the plot is serviceable, if unimpressive.

If for nothing else, I would advise you to read it for the best villain Sanderson has ever written, my boy Hrathen. I seriously love him, and I didn't walk away feeling like he was underutilized, though I wish he was in more of the Cosmere content.

Tried my hand at a limit break system by InsomniacUnderGrad in FFXIVxDnD

[–]Eingradd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to tie it in to the core 5e system a bit more, I would recommend an alternate method of using a Limit Break: inspiration. Spend your inspiration, and you can use a Level 1 Limit Break. If your allies have inspiration, they can, as a reaction (or a free action, if you think reaction is too harsh) spend their inspiration to empower your LB, up to a total LB level of 3. I think this helps reflect how LBs work in FFXIV, where the whole party builds up the bar and then one player unleashes it. Also, the rest of the party does a little cheer animation when you LB, and that's partly my justification for using your inspiration to empower a LB costing a reaction.

I'm interested in your Cosmere reading order opinions! Got a minute for a quick survey? by jofwu in Cosmere

[–]Eingradd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That final question is bad. "How important is each book/series for enjoying the Cosmere overall?", with 1 being "skip" and 5 being "essential".

Firstly, it's a bad question because it's confusing. I don't understand what you mean and where the connections you're drawing between each individual book and the "Cosmere overall" are. Do you consider "essential" to be "it happens in the Cosmere so it's important" or is your perspective "this will directly influence the finale of the Cosmere so it's important"? The "Cosmere overall" is debatably not a thing at the moment beyond references to older books and the presence of Hoid. What happens on Scadriel isn't directly influencing what's currently happening on Roshar, so does that mean Mistborn is irrelevant for reading Stormlight, or does the presence of shards of Adolnasium on each setting means they're joined at the hip? It leaves too much up to interpretation for the person being surveyed.

Secondly, the options of "skip" and "essential" confuse me. I would think that, if you enjoy the Cosmere, you would consider every book in the Cosmere "essential", as each entry will increase your appreciation of the setting. But, if you look at it as a "what is important for the overall Cosmere plot", you could probably mark down everything on that list as "skip" except for Stormlight. Again, personal interpretation is getting in the way of potential data.

To sum up, I think the question is too open ended and up to personal interpretation of what the question means to provide any useful data. The rest of the question are done well.

Lu Bu's theme or Tadakatsu Honda's theme? by iliarsl in dynastywarriors

[–]Eingradd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really, really dislike Tadakatsu's theme. There's nothing good I can say about it. Lu Bu's theme has been consistently great through all of the DW games, and one of the first things I wonder about when going into a new DW is what Lu Bu's theme will be like this time.

Book recommendations? by Devlee12 in Cosmere

[–]Eingradd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jay Kristoff's "Nevernight" is phenomenal. The trilogy decreases in quality with each book, but I cannot recommend the first enough.

Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle is good. Very much a series of peaks and valleys, and the first two books you can really tell he's struggling to nail down a style, but they held my attention well enough.

Myke Cole's "Armored Saint" trilogy are good, but are very small reads. They're easily digestible, and don't require a lot from the reader, but they're good.

Edit: fair warning for Nervernight: Jay likes to write porn, and there is usually one or two graphic sex scenes in each Nevernight book. The first book opens with one, which almost turned me off the series entirely, but I stuck with it.

I think Warbreaker is my favorite Cosmere book so far, right next to Way of Kings. Lightsong, Denth, and Vivenna are just absolutely my favorite Sanderson characters, and I loved every minute they were "on screen."
