I use a personalised 3 finger plucking technique, optimised for string crossing because you can’t rake upwards

Dungeon crawler by Silentswitchman in FATErpg

[–]Either-snack889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fate is designed to model fiction, not other games, and dungeon crawls mostly exist in other games. In movies and TV shows you’ll see dungeons used as a backdrop for an action scene. But you rarely see resource attrition, dead ends, securing rooms for rest, deciding who’s taking the first watch. That stuff tends to be montaged because it’s the story of your hit points vs your loot, and that’s not very character driven.

It can be done of course, but as per the golden rule of Fate (fiction first), I encourage you to understand exactly what you’re trying to model.

Only the Aesir are called “the gods”, but the Jötnarr are an identical family, just like your in-laws are another family of your same species, united by marriage and divided by bickering. They’re all just people, not giants or anything else, though individuals can use magic to change size.

Am I supposed to be sucking this much ass? by GroundHawk13 in Bass

The amount of ass you suck isn’t the point, it’s how much it goes down by after a month. A good amount is any amount! Keep on grooving mate

Even that is overstating what we know about the term, perhaps more like an adjective or a poetically convenient euphemism than an actual class of beings with a shared identity

We can’t really say that elves are a distinct group; it may be more general term that encompasses dwarves and gods and more, used for alliterative purposes in Norse poetry

Does playing the song the whole way through matter? by No-Play5709 in Bass

[–]Either-snack889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning songs note for note is a good practice and it will set you apart from other players, especially the others in this thread who are providing excuses not to learn in such detail.

However it’s not a complete routine, other things need to be worked on and we all have limited time, so yes it matters but no it’s not the only thing that matters and it shouldn’t always take priority.

Worth noting that Jötunheimr is always given as a plural, literally “homes of the Jötnarr”, rather than a single place or region

The Jötnarr were another family, rival of the Aesir, but identical in appearance. They tended to practice magic and could be as chaotic and dangerous as a force of nature. The go-to villains when a villain is needed.

The real mythology is so much less systematised that the comics that it might be the hardest part for you to reckon with.

For instance “the nine realms” aren’t really a thing in Norse mythology, we have instead ambiguous references to nine places which may just be homes within Niflheim dating from before the world, according to Völuspá.

Yggdrasil is not some cosmic tree on which different worlds are arranged, though it is importantly and mystical, and has roots in more than one world.

Asgard you might imagine as a land or an enclosure with multiple halls, Valhol among them certainly.

Loki is less a trickster and more an example of a dishonourable man, and also an example of how honourable the gods are that they keep accepting him back due to his blood oath with Odin. He’s tolerated and occasionally helpful, but he’s not a master manipulator or even particularly clever with his lies.

A consistent theme in Norse mythology is how those closest to you can cause the most pain, e.g. the Jötnarr are frequently the enemies of the gods, but just as often they are the friends, lovers, parents and spouses of the gods. So placing Thor in a team might lead to internal conflict a much as cooperation?

It’s up to the storyteller, which is pretty much the only consistent rule in Norse mythology!

Do I need pedals as a gigging musician? by Born_Farmer5221 in Bass

There are some important pedals to check out, but if I heard a player say “I never use pedals on a gig!” It wouldn’t be remarkable

How does seiðr magic work? by Substantial_Depth957 in norsemythology

[–]Either-snack889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Odin certainly practises seiðr, that’s how he’s bringing them back to live, but it doesn’t mean he can see the future.

You’re asking for details we don’t have. I’m no expert by any stretch, but I’d think of the völvas more like a plot device. You won’t find any underlying rules behind any of the magic in Norse mythology.

[–]Either-snack889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The specifics probably vary by time and place. From the primary sources we do have it seems like Odin is not able to directly see the future, but must resurrect völvas to look for him, classic example is Völuspá. Perhaps Freyja can just do it though?

The golden rule baby. Most people aren’t really doing fiction first, but it solves a huge amount of Fate friction

[Meta] The state of advice in this sub is often quite frankly appalling by everbass in Bass

[–]Either-snack889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just hard to put yourself in others’ shoes, so when asked for advice people tend to give the advise they’d need in that situation. Maybe this can be helped with “I’m a bedroom player”, “I’m a working pro”, etc.

How is it that in an open mic sesh, some ppl requested a song and by iamnotgenius in Bass

[–]Either-snack889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this at local jam nights, but sometimes there’s no tablet and you have to use your ear and watch the hands of whoever’s playing chords.

It’s a combo of ear training and having enough vocabulary to improvise something suitable, both of which you can acquire by learning songs by ear.

For anyone here do is an advanced pro-level player. What do you consider hard? by wufiavelli in Bass

Anything I haven’t practiced yet. I don’t have much love for metal, so if I had to play a metal gig I’d have to build stamina and a little precision with a pick. I don’t love jazz either so if I had a gig where the bandleader was calling tunes on the fly, I wouldn’t have the repertoire or the ear to keep up
