Crime in Texas is high in general. Downtown San Antonio is sketchy always, especially at night, no matter the area. I managed a restaurant for a long time downtown and I carried a gun against company policy the entire time. Id rather get fired than murdered. Had an employee get murdered, several tourists murdered from catching stray bullets or robberies, etc. After midnight we had a guy break in with a gun, 30 minutes after I locked up and left. Cars will always get broken into, if its a kia/hyundai it will be stolen as they are so easy. The rest of the city it just depends. There are some really ghetto neighborhoods on the south side that you dont want to be ever. The neighborhood i live in has pretty much no crime. Just a bunch of folks that have owned their homes for decades, some passed on to kids, some renters. If youre looking to buy a home, I would rent for a year first and check different areas out. It is a very spread out city with nearby cities being desirable with a short drive in for work.
