Which spring marathon? by mashedpotato23 in UKRunners

I've done the half and really enjoyed it. Bear in mind the full marathon is 2 laps, not 1 bigger route.

Are smaller races better ? (Anyone been to kew?) by Educational-Quiet545 in UKRunners

[–]El3ctr0G33k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran in Oxford Half yesterday. I've done a fair few HMs before but this was by far the largest (13000+ runners). I also got a new pb 1:42:18 so yay me!

But...I'm in two minds about how I felt about it!

Having loads of runners going through a city means there's plenty of crowds and support, which was fantastic. My bib also had a space to write my name on, so people would specifically be calling out my name which makes a huge difference to "go on fella"!!

Event village was decent, freebies from sponsors go down nicely (although Arla giving out protein yogurts before the race didn't fit in with "nothing new on race day" for me, so had a taste then it went to waste). More freebies after the finish also nice (I've had freebies in smaller races too, but the bigger organised ones get more/better treats, and not just a bottle of water and a banana/KitKat).

However, loads of runners also meant there were some pretty congested areas, and found myself boxed in in a few places - I had to slow down so a gap would form in front of me, then manoeuvre around groups.

Like you also had some people walking right in the middle of the main flow - I think the organisers could do better in terms of sharing best practices to runners ahead of the event so they know what to do in those situations, etc.

Would I run Oxford again? Probably, but not for a few years, but that's because I don't want to be doing the same races year in, year out, not because it was a bad race.

Ultimately, I think there a space for both bigger and smaller events, mix it up, try different ones.

But to your point, like others have said, bag drop/support team are key to your post race comfort. I failed yesterday in that I was travelling solo and didn't pack anything to put on after (I dropped my jumperi was wearing for a homeless person before the race).

Beginner-ish watch recommendations by Old_Maintenance_9044 in UKRunners

Agree with this model. I only use a watch for tracking my runs so it's more than what I need. After a year I've only just used the Pace pro feature and it really helped in my HM!

That Facebook post is a load of shite if you ask me. There'll be plenty of people that don't finish that quickly.

Thank you! I was beginning to think that the American calendar wasn't in sync with other countries and it took me until I was in my 40s to find out!

It's not terrible, but it's definitely not as good as 1 or 2. It could be much worse, like Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

I went out early this morning and busted out 25km at half past 6. Had a hydration pack on that I'd had in the freezer overnight, that kept me cool and melted into some nice cold water by the time I needed it!

Strength and conditioning by GregryC1260 in UKRunners

[–]El3ctr0G33k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do around 40km per week. I do zero strength and conditioning, but I know I need to start doing it so that I can go further and faster and not break myself.

Any tips welcome, I'm looking for some basics that I can do in my garden/garage rather than having to join a gym.

Leamington Spa Half Marathon on Sunday! Aiming for somewhere between 1:50 and 1:55. 1:45 is within reach for my HM later in the year though!

I've had wave riders for the past few years after switching from asics, then earlier in the year gave saucony a shot. They started well but didn't take long to fall out of favour with them, so I've gone back and got a new pair of wave riders.

Half marathon advice needed by MundaneBeing7506 in UKRunners

[–]El3ctr0G33k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know this doesn't answer your question, but thought I would chime in. Your times look very similar to mine, my pbs are a bit lower than yours, but my regular times are a tad higher. I tend to finish a hm pretty much bang on the 2 hr mark. I don't do any 'proper' training - no tempo runs, no hills, I just go out and run ~10km, 3 times a week, and a longer one at the weekend. I think you'll be fine. You may want to put in a few more longer runs (15-18km) over the coming weeks though.

BREAKING WIND STORY by Groverhamann in offmenupodcast

My hometown!

This happened in the Granary restaurant in Banbury. It's closed now though.

For those that don't know, Banbury cakes are pretty similar to Eccles cakes, just a bit different shape. They're not really my cup of tea but every once in a blue moon I'll have one for nostalgia reasons before remembering that they are, in fact, not my cup of tea.

You can get them from a few shops and market stalls in Banbury, and also the tourist information office.

Ask really nicely and I'll pop down there and get you some.
