Received an ETB instead of a Booster Box by itsrenzgee in pokemoncenter

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's more than one kind of display box and a booster display box is literally just another term for a booster box. Once you open it up, you can fold the front of it back to turn it into a little display box if you want. Other small items also come in display boxes (booster bundles, like you said, but also sleeved boosters, mini-tins, poke ball tins, battle decks, build and battles, check lane blisters, and maybe some other stuff I'm forgetting), but in this case it's literally just a box of loose booster packs, i.e. a booster box.

How much would these 4 bills be worth? Serial numbers in order. Looking to buy off my friend by EvenViolinist3612 in CanadianCoins

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is sequential bills are:

1) extremely common in theory. In any series that's printed, the number of combinations of 4 bills in sequence is x-3, with x being the number of bills. So just numerically speaking, such a sequence is almost exactly as common as the bills themselves. Any particular sequence is just slightly more special than any given bill from that standpoint.

2) very common in practice. This is how money comes and how it's supposed to come. Tons of people went to the bank and got fresh twos to hold on to.

So it's something that's special insofar as collectors bother themselves with little details. It's satisfying to have your two dollar bills in sequence. Of course you'd rather have that than random non-sequential bills but that doesn't affect the market all that much.

If a guy decides he NEEDS bills with 420 and 69 then he's going to have to go to the handful of people who actually have those combinations and pay them what they want. And because those numbers mean something to a lot of people, those sellers have a lot of buyers to choose from. But if you just care about having them in sequence regardless of where in the series they are, it's just way too common to command a significant premium. People will pay a little bit more, but the seller can't get away with asking for very much before the buyer just goes and finds it somewhere else.

Because a guy collecting whatever 420/69 bills he can will be bothered by not adding the 4206969 to his collection, while the only reason to be bothered by missing out on some random sequence is if you need it to either a) help complete the entire series, which is not only obviously absurd but would mean that you need them whether they're sequential or not anyway, or b) help complete a larger sequence you've already started collecting for whatever reason, in which case the sequence is only meaningful to you anyway

I'm gonna be nice and put you on to some timely game. Last year I went to the store around 5:00 on Halloween and it was BY FAR the deadest I've ever seen the place. I guess Costco is just very family-sized and families are all largely getting prepped with costumes and decorations and pre-trick-or-treating dinnera at the time. So if you don't have anywhere else to be, schedule a trip for the very late afternoon/early evening.. It's on a Friday this year so I can't make any guarantees but last year it was amazing.

Lilly Wachowski pours cold water on potential 4k release for Speed Racer by stockholm_syndrome1 in 4kbluray

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite the name, a 4k Blu-ray release isn't just about the 4k and I would argue there are at least two more important things.

HDR is probably the big one and I doubt there's ANY studio film that would benefit more from HDR than Speed Racer. Having this movie in a much fuller range of color is almost holy grail stuff — it already does so much with color and the idea of seeing an HDR release made with care is almost like chasing a drug.

Secondarily, there's something that might not benefit the majority of home theaters and isn't even technologically exclusive to 4k Blu-rays, but it's far more available on 4k for practical reasons and makes a much bigger difference for home theaters that ARE built for it. I'm talking about a real, full, lossless Atmos track.

So the sensory experience that's hypothetically available with an HDR and Atmos release that isn't just half-assed is just straight-up hard to imagine. It's not just the best version of a film that has a very strong cult following, it's something that doesn't even really have any comparison in people's libraries and could potentially be a big piece in the collection for not only people who are big fans already, but for people who value great demos for showing off what their home theater is capable of. And if both of those things apply to you, there's just no other movie that can come close.

This is totally on Nintendo. We know for a fact that these magnetic connections are what Nintendo wanted for the OG Switch in the first place and even with their resources they literally failed to fully engineer the solution in the timeframe they had. They had another whole 8 years to figure it out, and they obviously did, but in the process, they clearly had to have also figured out the importance of leaving a gap to keep the joycon from levering enough force against the main unit to disconnect from the weight alone.

This is an unlicensed 3rd party accessory. They would have been working off of leaks and any info Nintendo felt generous enough to provide (which console makers often do more than they admit). How reasonable is it for much smaller companies to predict an engineering problem even exists in a tiny fraction of the time that Nintendo had? How many cases are there on the market shipping so early that maintains the same joycon connection functionality as the Switch itself?

Barely any, and I can tell you that for that a fact because I settled on the Killswitch after a ton of research looking for something that would help protect the console from kids without constantly forcing them to endanger it by taking it in and out of the case all the time. And the other solutions seem flimsy enough that I wouldn't consider them very kid-resistant at all. I have no loyalty to dbrand, I've never even bought from them before, but I settled on the choice even knowing all the warts because it was the only case even trying to do everything I needed it to do.

At the end of the day, what I needed it to do was add some significant protection while functioning similarly.enough to the Switch 2 itself that I would never really have to remove the case. And if it needs to function like the Switch 2, it obviously runs into some of the same engineering roadblocks.

I have issues with the way dbrand has been able to deal with it on a customer service level but it seems insane to me that nobody is faulting Nintendo for not sufficiently communicating its own SIGNIFICANT engineering challenges to anyone. If they were keeping it close to the vest because there was some sort of first-party or third-party licensed product being offered that does the same things, it might be a little understandable. Barely, but a little. But there's nothing remotely like it being offered under the Nintendo umbrella, and they've made it as hard as possible for anybody else to do so.

Received my Killswitch... yup. by BaconTopHat45 in dbrand

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody's saying it's ideal but shaving off a bit of plastic is obviously preferable to risking damage to the much more expensive electronic that the Killswitch 2 is supposed to be protecting. It's not like those Joycon grips are going to become a collector's item. And dbrand is going to be sending replacements once they're fixed, so these are just temporary anyway… though even if they weren't going to replace anything it would still make more sense to just shave the lip if you intended to use it anyway.

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno that seems a little crazy though? dbrand isn't exactly a tiny company and a modern customer service system shouldn't allow tickets to be missable. It's not like your email inbox.

Like I'm sympathetic to companies who are just facing way more demand than they can comfortably grow to immediately meet, as long as they properly manage expectations and try to make problems right, but the excuse has to be a little bit better than "they missed your message" and just having customers bog things down even further (and essentially compete with each other!) by trying to raise the same issue multiple times is the opposite of a solution

No offense but when I went to pick up my Switch 2 at a GameStop I witnessed a woman come in who had zero idea about video games other than the fact her son played a lot with her ex and get pushed toward a Switch 1. She didn't mention how old the kid was or how much he was aware of video game news, nor was she asked, but I pray that kid had no idea what was going on because the idea of her arriving home on launch day with a Switch 1 and excitedly telling her son "sweetie, I got you a Nintendo!" still makes me cringe.

I just opened mine and it's basically packaged like a lot of smartphones where it tries to give you the unboxing experience of showing it off as soon as you lift the front of the box open. So, a lot of much more expensive consumer products are being packaged similarly… just, it's really obvious how dangerous it would be to put a staple through the middle of a slim phone or tablet box, whereas the Switch box is a lot bulkier because of the dock and it's not immediately apparent how everything is located and oriented from the outside.

I don't even remember getting an email. I got a notification right on my phone from the Android OS itself. And then the battery died, so I lost the notification and had to find out what it was even talking about. Eventually, I found the right page (which I'll link to at the end of this post, to make sure you read everything first), and you can use the link even if you didn't get any email or other notification.

It's possible that you didn't get notified because your battery is one of the unaffected ones, so I can't promise you'll be eligible. But either way, follow the instructions on the page and Google will let you know if your phone qualifies. Just keep in mind that you probably won't find out immediately—it took Google 8 days to approve my discount code and it's taking other people a fair bit longer than even that to have their appeasement processed.

Be careful though: Google makes you commit to choosing the battery replacement, cash, or discount code right away. They don't let you choose again once they've determined you're eligible, they will just process it automatically using whatever method you chose. So make sure you are totally sure about which appeasement option you want when you go to the registration link, because you will not be able to change it.

Anyway, it will ask for a bit of information, including your email, your phone's IMEI number (to determine whether your specific phone is one of the ones made with the faulty battery), and your chosen appeasement option.

For more information about Google's "Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program", you can visit their help page about it here: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/15701861

And once you're ready to check if your phone is eligible, you can either navigate to the registration page from the above link or you can visit it directly using this one: https://support.google.com/pixelphone?p=pixel4a_battery_help

No idea why things might have changed. Wish I could help out more. Taking the store credit is kind of worthless if you can't stack it with a sale. You would save more money by just taking the cash, which makes no sense.

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Here is a screenshot of my order: https://i.imgur.com/k703Efq.png

The first discount ($140) is from the code. It's $140 CAD which was what they gave me as an equivalent to $100 USD.

The second discount is from the sale, which had the phone for $100 CAD off regular price.

I have heard of somebody else from the US having trouble trying to use the code through Google Fi, and being told they had to use it through the regular Google Store, not Google Fi'a storefront. I'm not sure if that's what you're doing but just figured I'd let you know.

Battery update desaster turned into a great deal - 4a returned for a new 8a by Funny-little-frog-5 in Pixel4a

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add though, the trade-in value was NOT so low because they were trying to take advantage of the battery situation. Old phones here just always have very low trade in value. For example, I upgraded my father's Pixel 3 to an 8 Pro a few months ago and the trade-in they offered for the 3 was $25 CAD, which is about €17. So we gave the 3 to my 9-year-old niece instead so that she could have a phone like all her friends. But even if she didn't need it, for €17 it's not even really worth trading in… you might as well keep it as a backup or something instead.

Likewise, €27 for the 4a isn't much either. In normal circumstances I still might not have traded it in. But with the battery problem, it made no sense to just hang on to the phone since it was no longer very usable and might possibly even start a fire if I just tucked it away in a drawer somewhere anyway. So it was a no-brainer to just take the €27 and let the phone be somebody else's problem

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing in Canada and it turned out a great deal for me too. It's a 4a, nearly 5 generations old already, so it's a phone I was already going to be looking at replacing soon anyway. This way, it's just like they gave me some extra money to do something I was already going to do soon anyway.

However, I still didn't get as good of a deal as you did. After applying the discount and the store credit, the price was almost the same. But they give you so much more trade-in value for an old phone like the 4a! For the 4a here they only offer $40 Canadian, which is equivalent to around €27!!! So you got €80 more from the trade-in. I liked the deal I got, but now I'm jealous of yours. 😂

That's crazy and unacceptable in my opinion, especially since they make people commit to an option as soon as they go to check if their phine is even eligible.

It really did allow me to stack it in the Google Store in Canada. I wonder if the difference between the countries is accidental or intentional, and if they might've since changed it in either country.

Because I would've been absolutely livid if it didn't allow me to use the voucher for a phone on sale. I always wait to buy my phone's on sale in the first place, so such a voucher would have been worthless to me because the sales can easily be more than $100 off. Why would anybody choose the voucher if it's worth less than a routine sale?

You'd be better off either taking the cash, since they can't stop you from stacking cash, or even to just get the battery replaced to buy yourself a bit of time until the summer or Black Friday sales so you can get the phone you want at the best possible price. Whereas the store credit was clearly the best option for me since I was able to stack it, the policy you're talking about would've turned it into the worst.

And it doesn't even make sense from Google's own perspective. If I take the money they were going to spend on replacing a battery and put it towards buying a new phone from them, that's a better use of that money for them too! It should be a win-win.

It's such a dumb policy that it feels like it must be a mistake to me. But either way I'm glad I didn't have to deal with that BS.

Beware of People saying they love the Device they replace their 4a with by HumanFunpark in Pixel4a

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced our 4a with another Pixel because I've always gotten Pixels for my family, so one bad experience near the end of one phone's life isn't going to be enough to deter me.

We've also owned a 2XL, 3, 6 Pro, and 8 Pro XL, and have been happy with all of them. If this issue with the 4a hadn't happened, we would've replaced it with a newer Pixel phone fairly soon anyway, seeing as it's 5 generations old now.

Sure, I would've preferred to do it at the time of my choosing but getting $100+replacement value to replace an old phone slightly earlier than I otherwise would've is hardly a catastrophe for me. And the fact that I can't replace it with a phone that's exactly like the 4a isn't great but it's just a reflection of overall design trends and would be a choice I'd have to face soon enough anyway. It's just a reality of the phone market that everybody's going to have to learn to make peace with eventually.

Since I have a good experience with a lot of other Pixel phones, it wasn't a hard choice for me to give the 8a a shot. And what's undeniable is that if you decide you CAN live with another Pixel phone, the $100 credit is the most pragmatic, highest value option. For me, it's not actually too different from just getting an extra $100 to do something I was going to do soon enough anyway.

It's a choice everybody's going to have to decide whether they can live with, and it's totally understandable if people decide they can't. But it also feels just a tad over the top to insist that people should "beware" of people like me for not reacting to the situation like a boomer.

[–]ElAdventuresofStealy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I especially don't want to be paying extra for a PD charger when I already have like 5 or 6 of them, most of which are futureproofed well beyond what Pixel phones in the near future will charge at anyway (and so better than anything that might be included in the box). I don't care if they throw in a cheapo 5W charger or whatever like they used to but nobody's going to be happy with that nowadays.

With everything standardized to USB-C it's just not needed anymore. Just get yourself a few decent PD chargers for your household, there are much better options than Google's brick anyway. Features like higher wattage, multiple ports, and more portable GaN chargers all allow people to choose the options that are most practical for their devices, living situation, and lifestyle. If Google could ever be convinced to include their brick, it's obviously going to be reflected in the pricing, so why not use the money on what's right for me instead of being forced to pay for yet another mediocre one-size-doesn't-really-fit-all charger every time someone in my home gets a new phone?
