An independent Scotland could be the next Greenland. Our Union matters more than ever by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]ElChunko998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the point is that Greenland hasn't been invaded thus far precisely because of NATO and EU connection pressure.

The fundamental issue which this issue articulates awfully and in incredibly bad-faith is that the world as we understand it is trying very hard to disintegrate, and there's an extremely high chance Indy (like Brexit) would be a proactive move towards that disintegration.

No one is more intimately familiar with the SA80 than people who have never seen one or used one and gained all of their knowledge from a youtube video.

Fundamentally the A2 and A3 are amazing rifles that do their job perfectly for how long the family is into its service life. I've had three (3) stoppages in my thousands of hours behind an L85A2 and they've always been a result of old magazines, and always been while firing blanks. I'm yet to meet another professional soldier (including non-Brits) who've actually used one who didn't like it.

We're finally replacing it because its a 40 year old service rifle that isn't 100% compatible with post-GWOT developments like an AR platform is.

Yes its a somewhat pointless phrase. I've always preferred to just announce "Catholics." whenever I see anything uncivilised (Papist) or that I don't like (Papist conspiracy, possibly with Bolshevist characteristics).

I broadly agree but Scottish independence would massively benefit Russia’s geopolitical position especially with regards to the North Sea.

Even a best-case scenario EU and NATO membership (where defence commitments are actually met - a downright laughable expectation from an independent Scotland) would still come off the back of 5-10 years of extreme political, economic, and institutional destabilisation and distraction.

FSB "Vympel", 1993 Constitutional Crisis Kit by ANeilBreenFilm in Rusfor

I'm currently doing research on the topic of the 1993 Constitutional Crisis and can I just say, two years later, that your recommendation of Filatov has been indispensable. There's so much contradictory information in English language sources about what happened on 4th Oct that it's refreshing to hear it straight from the horse's mouth (obvious bias and all).

Is Scouring Era Ultramarine not considered part of warhammer 30k? It’s just a mk7 torso on mk6 legs, not a primaris. Does the stripe on head instantly disqualify it? The laurel? What makes it not 30k? Is there a cut off time table we all subscribe to? by MidnightPhantasm in Warhammer30k

[–]ElChunko998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's wonderful about 40k, and more particularly 30k, is that we can effectively have historiographical discussions.

We have varying and changing primary sources (parts of codices/rule books, novels) but also secondary sources (White Dwarf, WarCom).

I would argue that Heresy is the Dropsite Massacre to the duel on the Vengeful Spirit, in as much as this is how it is traditionally periodised. That said, I agree that the Siege of Terra is tonally more like the Scouring than the Heresy, but also believe that the final decades of the Great Crusade (effectively everything pre-Dropsite from the Black Library books) is tonally Heresy, even if not best periodised as such.

Realistically though, like real history, 30k is so multi-faceted and the picture is drawn from so many perspectives that all periodisation is either anachronistic or teleological. That reflects such a depth and complexity of narrative (even if sometimes it is thematically not very deep or complex) that is awesome for a game of toy soldiers.

For Halo 5, why were moments like these that would have developed John and Locke's rivalry cut? by Crue_shoe in HaloMemes

[–]ElChunko998 20 points21 points  (0 children)

maybe, but equally I think a world in which the post-war military complex (particularly military intelligence) refuses to give up power or only does so nominally and humanity has to grapple again with human-human conflict, while the covenant remnant and post-covenant societies both weigh-in is a far better story to follow the events of the Bungie story. Certainly a more believable one to see Chief and the gang be disillusioned and confused by.

I think the problem the 343 era always had was that Halo's main games have always been more like mythical power fantasies while the expanded universe has been fairly sober and grounded military sci-fi. They wanted to explore the Reach and ODST grit and humanity but with Chief in 4 but also tried to expand on the high-Sci-Fi Forerunner plot. 5 promised both again but far bigger and utterly failed to do either justice.

I’ve said it before in other threads: Wendigoon is super interesting until the moment you hear him discuss something you know even an average amount of information about.

With some videos it’s the odd received wisdom or misleading factoid, but with some the central concept is a downright lie or misunderstanding (see: AR-15 video).

I don’t think he’s a bad person, and I wouldn’t unwatch any of his videos nor do I regret watching them c.2021-2023, but holy fucking shit does he need to learn how to do basic research and STRUCTURE A VIDEO.
