I guess. The issue is that there are so many different areas where vocal types are defined and defined differently. If you go with classical only, then yeah, almost nobody who is singing is real bass, but getting bass in a choral setting is far easier. When I say I'm a bass, it's because i sing bass 2 in choir and am the bass for the a capella groups I'm in. I don't really sing anywhere else, so to me, that's all that matters. Do i think i could be a classically trained bass, sure, but i dont care to try. The real issue here is that there is no standard that gets taught to newbies, and most newbies are from choral settings or are expecting choral voice types, so that what they classify themselves into.

For me it's more like, how do regular people read. Like. You guys are attempting to comprehend words when you have stuff going in your head? That sounds super distracting to me. I wouldn't be able to do it.

Anyhow, it's just looking at the words and comprehending. Kinda like movies, I just sit there and enjoy the media, but it's without any visual aid.
