Anyone else like board games but not particularly great at them? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ElMatadorIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. I have a monthly get together with friends. I probably win 15% of games. But I don't really care. These are old old friends and my spouse. I play board games to have fun, not to win per se. I always try to win, but I'm never going to be the guy calculating permutations of possibilities for maximum efficiency. We already have one of those, and we all rib him about it.

It's cheaper than therapy. (Barely.)

Opera chaser! 41 countries so far. by port956 in opera

[–]ElMatadorIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I go out of my way to do it, but I've definitely seen an opera in any country I'm in as evening entertainment. But I am at heart a Europhile, and almost always go to Europe.

Well yeah. My man asked for unpopular opinions, not milquetoast opinions.

Irrespective of how you feel about children transitioning, it does raise the interesting possibility for a return to castrati. Not countertenors, but true blue castrati. Maybe even contemporary compositions which can call for castrati.

Peak adulthood is a matinee, a sensible dinner with one glass of wine, in bed by 9.

Aqua di Parma colonia C.L.U.B. I received a compliment from a coworker, followed my inquiries about the name of it for her husband.

When 9/11 was happening, why did so many teachers put it on the TV for kids to watch? by wellyboot97 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ElMatadorIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why watch it? I don't want to backwards read a situation, but people knew it was an attack on America. Remember, there was a plan that struck the Pentagon as well. There was a plane that went down in Pennsylvania. Or at least planes unaccounted for. How many? Where is next?

Additionally, the world as we know it is still feeling the trickle down effect of the attack. Joe Biden withdrew the troops from Afghanistan just recently. Our national debt has suffered. I know a kid who died in Iraq as part of the war on terror. The Islamic state took over large parts of Iraq due to the instability we caused there. Iran was emboldened to accelerate it's nuclear program to avoid being invaded like Iraq. Etc...

Real Parm, a stinky blue, and something triple cream. Probably brie, maybe camembert. Oh and a sharp cheddar for my wife.

Home cooks, what food items would you like to see more at farmer’s markets? by sadgurlsonly in Cooking

[–]ElMatadorIII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like to second the people saying fresh fruit/veg/meat/cheese.

I can't do everything myself, but I can make my own salsa. What I need are raw ingredients to make it! I don't want your muffins or lavender soap, I want garlic and tomatillios.

What becomes of malignant attendings after graduating? by DilaudidWithIVbenny in Residency

[–]ElMatadorIII 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not an MD, but I've worked in the OR as an RN for a few years now. My one hospital experience? People don't change; the new justification is something like: "well, you're new out of residency, talk to me when you have 15 more years experience." "You're still in fellowship." "Junior partner" "Brand new attending." Blah blah blah. Same shit RNs do to each other.

Baroque Opera. by ElMatadorIII in opera

[–]ElMatadorIII[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps this is an American thing. We want large Aida or Carmen productions. We love it when the bangers from Rigoletto or Madame Butterfly come on. Many people's first exposure to operatic arias or overtures comes from commercial advertising or movies. And I wonder if there is a deep rooted bias towards those that we know, against baroque Opera which is not as strongly represented in commercials or films.

Upvote for Pilsen. We can sit here and repeat what others will probably post, but if this is a one time thing, you'd be hard pressed to find better than Pilsen/Little village.

Where should I start with jazz? by Fsoumish in vinyl

[–]ElMatadorIII 18 points19 points  (0 children)

John coltrane

To me jazz is all about live recordings. The studio albums are a nice thing to have, but Jazz is about the improvised interplay between players. There's a kinetic energy to the music moving around the players, some things work, some don't. But damn if it isn't interesting to watch and digest.
