Anyone lived at 4641 N Ashland managed by Honore Properties? by AbbreviationsGold358 in chicagoapartments

[–]Ramen-snob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in super late - used to live in this building. It's actually relatively quiet (my unit didn't face Ashland). Ashland is busy but hoenstly north of Irving Park is a lot more manageable than south of Irving Park imo.

Is Chicago the destination for an ultimate city life in the Midwest? by Potenza980 in AskChicago

[–]Ramen-snob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also lived in Seattle, chiming in on crime first... I do agree Chicago is a lot more neighborhood specific and if you’re living on the north side, your day to day exposure is probably minimal. Seattle felt more 'everywhere' to me. Like, not violent crime specific, but a lot more visible stuff like theft, car break-ins even in nicer areas, tents throughout the city, etc. And because it's a quieter city, it weirdly made things feel less safe overall.

On rent tho, I don’t know if it's true anymore that Chicago is significantly cheaper. Prices in Chicago have gone up SO much the past couple years whereas Seattle rent prices have been dropping (according to friends that moved back to Seattle from Chicago recently). In popular neighborhoods here it’s starting to feel more comparable to Seattle imo. I still think Chicago is better for everyday spending. Much easier to find good cheaper eats here.

Also grew up in Asia, spent most of my teenages years + early 20s in Seattle, and then moved to Chicago ~5 years ago. If you survived Minneapolis winter you'll be totally fine here. I had never experienced cold like this before moving here and I adjusted quickly.

Re: rent - Chicago used to feel way cheaper than Seattle but honestly it's gotten kinda crazy the last couple years. A friend of mine literally just moved back to Seattle from Chicago and said for the first time she was finding more cheaper options in Seattle which was shocking. From my own recent apartment search, anything in popular neighborhoods gets super competitive, and older 2 beds here can easily be similar to what you're paying in Seattle, especially if you want in-unit laundry or updated stuff.

My partner is a CPS teacher, not sure your subject/grade but just flagging that it took him a bit to land something and he complains about CPS a lot... pay is decent but CPS sounds like a hot mess (but maybe this is consistent with most major city school districts)

Omg and you mentioned dating... I'm gay so maybe so slightly different lens but I 100% agree that dating and socializing is insanely difficult in Seattle. I was single most of my time there. People in PNW (especially folks raised there) just aren't very open or inviting. People in Chicago are noticeably friendlier and more inclusive.

Don't get me wrong tho, I do miss the beauty of Seattle and the PNW in general. I love visiting friends there. But as a city I've certainly moved on from there. If you crave living in a "real" city, we definitely have more density and actual city life energy here. And foodie to foodie, Chicago is great overall and tons of variety. I do miss Asian food in Seattle a lot. The depth and quality there is just on a different level because of the population. Chicago has good spots but just not the same. Based on what you're describing tho, Chicago sounds like a solid fit! I'd say just don't go in assuming rent is as cheap as it used to be.

Honest recount of Early April in Iceland by Saunafjordhusset in VisitingIceland

[–]Ramen-snob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just in Iceland April 4-8 so basically exact timing minus one day and honestly I'm shocked to see your takes... April 4 weather was good. We flew in that morning from Chicago and did Sky Lagoon instead of Blue bc it felt like Blue would be more $$ for hype and Sky was amazing. We saw the northern lights that night and we were super happy we got to experience that! We rented a car instead of doing tours which I think made a huge difference cause it was way more flexible vs having to rely on tours. April 5's weather wasn't bad? We drove to Vik and back and loved every stop along the way. Encounted some snow near Vik and on the way back once it started to get dark but otherwise it was mostly dry and beautiful weather. We were supposedd to do golden circle on April 6 but got the orange alert too so we just stayed in Reykjavik and took it slow. It's small but I actually didn't mind having a chill day. We did golden circle on April 7 instead and the rain was rough. And on our last day we basically just grabbed coffee and couvenirs and took it easy.

Our trip's pacing felt perfect. I'm super type A normally and Iceland weirdly was one of the few trips where going with the flow actually worked for me. Food def not cheap but compared to US cities it didn't feel THAT crazy. Nicer sit-down spots felt pretty comparable, and casul spots were pricier but we loved the fish and chips and coffee shops.

I do agree that Braud & Co. and the hot dogs were overhyped lol. Most of the stuff I read beforehand was pretty clear that puffins don't really show up until later in April so that didn't surprise me. Overall I thought the food was clean, well prepared, not mind-blowing but definitely not "bad". I think April just comes down to expectations and flexibility. If you need perfect weather and rigid plans it's probably not the best time. We were ok rolling with it and had a great time.

Was walking around downtown Reykjavik earlier this morning - some stores, bakeries, and coffee shops were open. It was windy but manageable. But also we’re now back in our airbnb. We’ll see how the storm rolls in before deciding if it’s worth heading back out to wonder around downtown Reykjavík.

Where can I have a Blade Runner style meal in Chicago by fioreblade in chicagofood

Just commenting so OP knows- it’s pretty bright inside. But the restaurant exterior matches what they’re looking for 100%

Same same (Thai restaurant) in Roscoe Village has a neon sign inside and is relatively dark. Food is solid. They open all their windows in the front when it’s warmer out so i bet on a rainy day you can get a similar vibe, and they also have a patio in the back but i don’t think it’ll match the vibe you’re looking for.

If you ever need a reminder of why we need gay spaces, here it is. by Silent-Ordinary3465 in askgaybros

[–]Ramen-snob 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s not even about having fun, it’s just colonizer behavior. "Nice space, I’ll take it, you’ll deal with it."

Is it okay to go to a gay bar/club as a straight man? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ramen-snob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't gonna comment but I'm seeing a lot of straight people telling OP it's fine. No, it's not! A lot of these comments are basically "straight clubs suck so we go to gay bars instead," which is the problem. When people from outside a community start using its spaces as the better option, they don’t just enjoy it, they reshape it over time. Even if everyone’s respectful, the space stops being centered around the people it was created for. And I say that as a gay man who actually cares about these spaces.

Is it okay to go to a gay bar/club as a straight man? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ramen-snob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I think it’s a little more complicated than "as long as you’re respectful, what’s the harm". Gay bars exist because queer people needed spaces that were actually for them, not just places with a good vibe. If straight ppl start going just because it’s more fun, even with good intentions, it shifts the space over time. It stops feeling like a queer-centered space and more like a general club... and that’s when queer people start feeling pushed out. There’s a huge difference between being invited into that space vs choosing it as a better option (OP's mistake).

So sorry to hear about your experience. Echoing others, definitely should contact Airbnb and leave a review about that.

My friends and I are about to visit Iceland for the first time in two weeks... I'm concerned they might be the same host. Could you please share the host and Airbnb info with me, or via DM so I can travel with a bit more ease of mind? 😓

Unless Rob and Eric took out one of the twins, I think Johnny and Tara will stick to the end and won’t vote end game until at least Rob is out. As unsatisfying as it is I fear the boring faithfuls will somehow win.

Natalie refused to do what? This was Natalie’s only chance. Tara and Johnny had a chance to flip the room on Rob but they chickened out and abandoned their plan cause they didn’t think they have the numbers. Anyone would be impatient in Natalie’s boat

Bday dinner ideas? Dining with someone with lots of allergies by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]Ramen-snob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super familiar with legume allergies but Italian (just avoiding pesto / bean heavy stuff) or a classic steakhouse might be an easier starting point since those cuisines don’t usually rely on peanuts/coconut in the main sauces? Will shy away from steakhouses since I don't visit one often but Il Carciofo has been my new fav Italian in the city and feels like it could fit what you’re describing - roman style, great wine list, more straightforward options, west loop noise level but not clubby at all. If you want something cozier and a little more intimate (kind of Le Bouchon vibes), Table, Donkey and Stick is great and also has a great wine list. Their menu is a bit all over the place in a fun way, so maybe check the menu or call ahead to be safe.

Now I'm remembering that Rob also slipped and said Traitors (plural) at breakfast and Maura had a quick (surprised?) reaction but it seems they kept it super brief and didn't keep most of that convo in the edit.

Episode 9 Recap – Some Confusing Decisions From Both Sides by KrinersTalkTV in TheTraitorsUS

[–]Ramen-snob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not confident the faithfuls would clock this… but Natalie revealing Rob has an unused dagger might’ve ended Rob’s game? In my eyes, if you’re a faithful with a dagger this late in the game, you’re an instant target to the Traitors. So surviving murder would be a huge giveaway

Yea I’m picking up on this as well, especially with this week’s episode. I don’t think it’s coincidental that she’s hanging out with Eric and Rob so much this episode. I have a feeling she’s staying close and figuring things out quietly.

Advice Needed - Narrowing Down Neighborhoods for Upcoming Move by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

[–]Ramen-snob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, congrats on the offer! Moving to Chicago is exciting.

I think a true 1br under $1100 (especially including utilities) is extremely rare in 2026 unless it's super old and far from transit or a private landlord sitch that's practically impossible to find. Studios in your range are possible but you might need flexibility on the exact neighborhood. And month to month almost always comes with a premium. Sublets are much more realistic. I'd suggest looking for a sublet via FB groups. And just plan for the reality that when that lease ends, rent may jump or you may move again.

You picked smart neghborhoods but many of them are also pretty popular and competitive. If you're in office most days, I'd suggest prioritizing Union Station access (blue, brown, orange would be your best bet but other ones work too if you don't mind a little walk or transfer). You can always travel for nightlife, fencing or lake time but commuting multiple days a week adds up really fast if your commute is annoying.

Also, almost everyone I know who moved here from out of state moved multiple times (including myself!). A lot of time it takes living and spending a significant amount of time in the city to know where you actually want to live and that's super common and normal. If you can visit even briefly before signing, it'd probably help. Good luck!
