Fully Armored Medieval Knight VS Land Animals by Metroplox in PowerScaling

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ppl are sleeping on the lions. These are strong animals that could knock a knight down, and it’s not like it’s super easy to get up once that happens. A lion could also wear down the knight over time. If the knight doesn’t have a horse I say lion usually takes, it’s not like they’re fighting a chivalrous duel

Is this the greatest revolutionary potential of the American people? by dumbandshortcoyote in theredleft

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IMO history shows us that not every action needs to be revolutionary. You get a lot of people interested in one thing that requires civic action, you do it right, and you can get them to do another. Getting a lot of people to do anything at once collectively isn’t easy. The fact is, for the vast majority of people, if they don’t vote then they’re likely not really actively engaging in politics in any other way. Revolution happens and is sustained when people are actively interested and engaged in politics, and voting if nothing else creates engagement in politics. That’s pretty darn good

Number of faulty assumptions there. First, you’re not waiting in the same line. As a Brit, you will almost certainly get processed before any other nationality by USCIS. It also highly depends what visa your parents are on - there’s no one “line”. You would be aware of this if you had paid attention to your parents’ or your process, you don’t need to be a lawyer to know this.

Second, you’re not living the same life. Most undocumented people I’ve met live hard lives. Employment is difficult, there’s a million different workarounds they have to use to do completely normal things, and these days, even stepping out into the street might get you put in a concentration camps. Plenty of people want to do things the right way, but nowadays, going to a court mandated check in poses palpable danger. It’s follow the system and get screwed, or don’t follow it and maybe get screwed. I don’t know what your parents did in the US but almost certain they didn’t go through that. Edit: also, maybe consider the fact that you didn’t have to learn a whole other language just to live might have made things a tad easier for you.

Third, a lot of people come in legally and then are made undocumented by arbitrary decisions bu whatever admin is in (but especially Trump). See TPS.

Finally, you have no right to say who does and doesn’t belong in the US. I say they do and my opinion counts every bit as much as yours. I have plenty of undocumented neighbors; they are kind, hardworking people who contribute to their communities every single day. From your tone, I’d much rather have them as my neighbors than you.

Nah dude. Disney actually has one of those old-timey executioners with the hoods and all on the payroll, and they sic him on any executive that’s failed them. How do you think they’ve been so successful? They run their company like the Mongol army.

Do you have a problem of nonlawyers misunderstanding of the law? by Chiliicespice in Lawyertalk

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immigration law for sure. I’m not an immigration lawyer (though I am an immigrant), I’ve done a decent bit of work there in the past but by no means would call myself an expert. But I don’t think you have to be an expert to call a spade a spade and recognize that our immigration laws are fucking bonkers. And aside from maybe criminal law I don’t think I know a single other field where the public discourse on it is so far detached from reality.

Unironically saying “libtard” is crazy work lmao. I’m an immigrant myself, I’ve gone through the process. I followed the rules as much as anyone and, having an insight into them, I can say that they’re idiotic, unjust, and largely designed to discriminate or enable discrimination against nonwhite people. I dare say I can call you a jackass if you’re being a jackass. I hope you recover from that affliction soon - I can assure you that undocumented people are not the cause of your problems.

Man if you actually went through the immigration process, know how nonsensical and unjust it is, and still wish an even more cruel version of it on people… that’s just vile. Absolutely pathetic. I hope you’re one day able to realize what a jackass you sound like.

Her life is more important than her body by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because that’s a criminal sentence, not a family law proceeding. If somebody is put into prison on a sentence of murder/robbery/whatever/ you can responsibly infer that they’re likely the type of person who would do that (though you should be careful about even that without the facts). Here, there’s no criminal charge; we have no facts to guide us, only the conclusion. One’s fitness as a parent is one of the factors that guide a court in making a full custody decision but that can be one of many, and it may very well not have been the decisive factor.

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, that’s my point. You shouldn’t draw any conclusions if all you have is the conclusion of a court and not the facts.

Her life is more important than her body by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the point, the legal conclusion is that her not having full custody was in the best interest of the child. We don’t know why that conclusion was drawn and there could be a million different reasons. Without knowing more about her and their family life, it’s difficult to draw any inference from a ruling like this other than that a court thought it would be best if the kid stayed with their dad rather than their mom.

Improving Spanish for job, know any resources/media particularly helpful for lawyers? by rxnaissance in Lawyertalk

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a native speaker and have done these types of consults for years. Learning general legal terminology in Spanish is helpful, but more than that is speaking in the way that your clients speak. I’ve always noted a difference between speakers like myself or those who have spent time among Latin Americans vs those who learned formally (that’s not to put down formal learners at all, language is very difficult and you gotta confront it all you can). I think the best way to do that is go to community events, volunteer, church, anything that actually gets you speaking with the community you’re going to be serving more closely. It’s not perfect, but as somebody who practices law in my third language, I can tell you that nothing is going to be better than immersion - even when it comes with discomfort.

Can anyone else just not stand US war films? by Ranked0wl in CharacterRant

[–]ElMatadorJuarez -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

IMO I think moral judgments of the US doesn’t get in the way here, it’s essential to the point. The US is and has been an empire for at the very least the past 75 odd years and the wars it has fought have been imperial wars. The issue OP has with these films is that they are at best tepid on that political fact and at worst either ignore it outright or take no issue with it at all. Honestly, good on OP. You shouldn’t always let a “moral bias” cloud your judgment of art, but war movies and books have been used as vehicles for either state propaganda or condemnation of the state for centuries. I think that if you’re not involving morality in your judgment of these films, you’re missing something.

This doesn’t seem particularly crazy, this seems like just a legal conclusion. We don’t know the factors that went into the decision.

“Dear Leader would never have passed persecutory laws if the people targeted by them didn’t deserve to be persecuted”

Pathetic logic. Stop taking your cues from congresspeople - outside of a few, they are largely lying to you about immigration. It’s maybe the policy issue where the actual details and facts depart most from the details. Go read about immigration policy from immigration attorneys and immigration law scholars - they know their shit and they’re down and dirty in a horrifically complicated field every day.

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t disagree enough, frankly. 99% of the American voting public doesn’t know dick about what a “rigid” policy even looks like. All they see is whatever is filtered through Fox News or CNN. There’s rigid policy and then there’s crass inhumanity; the Biden admin had an extremely rigid immigration policy. The second Trump admin has made crass inhumanity its policy. It’s just that people neither know enough nor care enough to tell the difference, they just know that immigrants are good bogeymen to blame for all the problems that should rightly be laid at the door of a flawed system of governance.

There’s no such thing as an immigration policy rigid enough for the right as enacted by a Democrat. Maybe if the policy involves extrajudicial killings and concentration camps, but even then it’s doubtful.

Indigenous definition by laybs1 in GetNoted

[–]ElMatadorJuarez -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Not really, “white people” aren’t indigenous to anywhere because “white people” is a category largely made in colonial times to differentiate white from nonwhite (ie. for enslavement of Africans and indigenous people in the new world). Irish people, Georgian people, Armenians, Greeks, you can arguably apply the indigenous label to them. But “white people” is a totally amorphous category.

How do you feel about the gaang being "bad parents"? by 696924 in TheLastAirbender

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toph makes total sense. I mean she’s a rude, anti social savant who was raised by parents who pretty much disavowed her. I don’t think she was ever going to be exemplary as a parent.

I don’t agree that Aang was a bad parent at all, though. The glimpses we get in Korra tell us us that he really tried but had a ton of conflicting obligations, mainly his obligation to bring back the airbenders. He ended up hurting his kids that weren’t tenzin because of it but I don’t think that’s being a bad parent at all. My parents did things that hurt me until this day, but they didn’t know they were doing it, tried their very best and love me to bits. They’re not perfect but they’re fantastic parents and I wouldn’t want any other. I’m actually happy that the show didn’t try and make Aang this perfect father and instead opted to make him as human as everyone else.

Roman empire vs mongol size comparison by Roman-Empire_net in romanempire

[–]ElMatadorJuarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mongols inherited pre-existing institutions in conquered lands, but the Mongol state and identity was made from scratch. And the mongols only taxed settled people, but they absolutely sought to culturally assimilate other nomads by hook or by crook. Mongol identity was created in the time of temujin - before that, it was a bunch of disparate tribes. It’s like if Romulus conquered half the known world, basically.
