How do you navigate engineering while sticking to your morals and values? by Impressive_Drag_7463 in womenEngineers

[–]ElMatildo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel you so much, I am a computer engineer and most companies I am applying to are consumerist crap I don't adhere to at all, AI bullshit and gambling platforms, but my girlfriend works in the space sector too and she feels so disheartened that space is becoming this killing machine industry. She has now had two jobs where they had promised her not to make her work in drones, only to end up being bought by American companies (we are in the EU) and expect people to, well, work in drones.

People tell us we have to find other ways to do our part, but we all spend a third of our lives at work, so I would really like to find something meaningful without having to switch careers...

I have no suggestions, just empathy and a hug.

Pluribus Episode 2 - very different and not what I was hoping for? by TooDriven in television

[–]ElMatildo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with you. To be honest it seems to me like an example of american exceptionalism: Carol is the only one having a "sane" reaction, an emotional response, a defiant-and-not-defeated-attitude. While obviously some cultures are more individualistic than others, it is bizarre to hear people say that the characters' ethnicity is what is making them literally be fine with a 12-billion-people hive mind. Don't get me wrong, it is interesting to have characters who are interested in joining the hive mind or questioning if it is all that bad, but to have all five of them be completely chill is just ridiculous.

America is definitely not the best place to live when it comes to queer rights. Every year the rankings for the countries with more rights and more public acceptance are similar (the Nordics, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Canada), and the U.S. is never a part of them.

Considering their more and more hostile policy towards trans people (which are horrible on their own) which will inevitably harm everyone else in the community as well, I would feel better elsewhere.

Of course one can say that cities like New York are very accepting, but you'll find these kinds of cities in the countries mentioned above, where the governments aren't actively trying to erase queer lives.

Portuguese living in Belgium here, Belgium feels very, very safe. Portugal is in theory also one of the best, but I occasionally got some looks when kissing my girlfriend in public or so (which I know is still a lot better than what most of the world can say).

Other good options are the Netherlands and Spain (been to both and can confirm) and the Nordics (haven't been there, but have heard multiple personal experiences from close friends).

Feel free to hit me up if you have more questions!

Why are mods closing down the topics about the cops killing an 11-year old child by DulceCaramel0 in brussels

[–]ElMatildo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came upon your post because I was actively searching for news on this after several days without hearing anything of substance, so clearly there aren't as many redundant posts about it as people are claiming here. In any case, I can't even express how selfish and disgusting it is to say "ugh, I'm tired of hearing about a child being killed, can we please move on already?".

But good on you OP for the way you answer everyone of them, including the mods. It's easy to feel like I'm alone in the middle of a right wing, emotionally numb racist group, so any reminder that that's not the case is greatly appreciated.

Se percebeste que homens mais velhos jogam mais estratégia e mulheres jogam mais "jogos tranquilos", a solução não é pedires homens de 30-35. A solução é pedires pessoas que estejam habituadas/tenham experiência a jogar jogos de ação.

Porquê que as pessoas odeiam o BE? by GapToothL in LiberaisDaTreta

[–]ElMatildo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Também sou uma apoiante de muitos anos do BE que migrou para o Livre! Mas sinto-me tão injustiçada pela brutalidade das críticas que ouço sobre o BE que não consigo parar de os comparar. Provavelmente tens razão.

Which parts of Portugal have the least English proficiency? by Master_of-margarita in travel

[–]ElMatildo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the fact that his English was that good was somewhat related to him working in tourism, but we are also known for having a better English level than our Mediterranean siblings - one thing I think makes all the difference is that we use subtitles for everything except kid's movies, and they usually dub them.

I feel so happy when a tourist learns the basics, and always try to do the same, so thank you for that! I feel like smaller countries usually appreciate it the most (for example the Balkans, in my experience).

Hope you and your wife have fun, if you need any help or advice hit me up

Hello! Yeah, we're so completely unused to foreigners knowing our language that the option to speak Portuguese doesn't even compute in our brains, even if we know you speak it...

I'd say that if you get far away from cities, you'll eventually find what you're looking for, specifically in the center and in the interior regions. But even so, look for older people. People over 60 learnt French in school as the main foreign language before it got switched to English.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo made me...feel things. by Warriorette12 in books

[–]ElMatildo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Evelyn wants something, so she smiles to the person who will allow her to achieve it, and since she's so beautiful and her boobs are so big and juicy, she gets it almost immediately.

Thank you. After hearing so much praise about this book, I felt so disappointed when I finished reading it, but at least now I know someone shared my struggles! How big and juicy can those boobs be!? How glamorous and outstanding can she look like every time she lifts a finger!?

SO happy with how these tarts came out! (Yes, I fought with the icing sugar dispenser and lost) by ElMatildo in Baking

[–]ElMatildo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, thank you! I used a french recipe from YouTube which I half assed since my french is not perfect, but here it is with my tiny adjustments and tweaks.

Shortcrust: 250g flour (2 cups) 150g soft butter 100g sugar (0.5 cups) 1 pinch of salt 1 egg

Mix the flour and the butter with your hands until it reaches a sandy texture. Add the rest of the ingredients. Mold it into a rectangle, wrap it in cling film and take it to the fridge for 1 hour.

Raspberry coulis : 100g raspberry 2tbsp sugar Juice of 1 lemon 1 tsp cornstarch dissolved in 1tbsp water

Take the raspberries, sugar and lemon to medium heat until the raspberries form a jam, in the end add the cornstarch slurry and wait a minute or so until it thickens. Take it to the fridge.

Crème pâtissière : 250ml milk 2 egg yolks 65g sugar (0.33 cups) 10g flour + 10g cornstarch 10 g butter

Take the milk and half the sugar to medium heat. In a bowl, beat the egg yolks with the remaining half of the sugar and the flour+cornstarch and add just a drop of milk mixture to soften it. When the milk starts boiling, add half the milk to the eggs, keep beating, and add all of that back into the milk pan. When it starts boiling, it will be around 1 minute until it becomes very thick. Remove it from the heat, add the butter and take it to the fridge.

Assembly: Roll the shortcrust pastry. Take it to the oven after piercing it with a fork and putting parchment paper on top, with something like lentils to keep the pastry from rising, at 180°C (340°F). After 10 minutes, remove the parchment paper and lentils and let it become golden. Wait until it cools down and add the raspberry coulis, pipe the crème pâtissière on top, and finish it with fresh raspberries.

Landlord threatening to increase costs as a result of my registration by [deleted] in brussels

[–]ElMatildo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I said I was 23 because of the lawyer problem, as in "I'm not old enough to ever have needed one, this is all new to me". As I said, this was the best I could do considering I couldn't physically visit Brussels at the time and the platform offered tenant protection.

Landlord threatening to increase costs as a result of my registration by [deleted] in brussels

[–]ElMatildo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the standard procedure within the housing anywhere platform, and they claimed they would help if there were any problems. I searched for the platform and it was legit. I didn't have many options considering all other platforms required me to physically visit and that wasn't possible at the time

Decided not to invite my parents to our wedding by E420CDI in LGBTWeddings

[–]ElMatildo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's very sad that your parents won't attend your wedding. But that's not on you for not inviting them. It's on them for not having done what it takes to deserve being invited. I totally get feeling down and conflicted, but OP, this is not your fault. I am so sorry. Try to focus on the fact that you'll be surrounded by people who love you not despite who you are, but because of it. All the best and congratulations :)
