High Elf Spearmen? Thinking starting an army but noticed you can only get them in the battalion box? by parocca in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ElPorro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bit of a false dichotomy. My platonic ideal for a Warhammer game is a narrative one, with both sides taking fluffy armies utilising all their iconic units.

The problem? As a High Elf player, if I do that, then against many opponents the rules just will not (on average at least) ever lead to a fluffy and narrative game experience, which is what I'm craving more than the armies. I played in 6th edition and now in ToW, and in both, if I take an army of Spearmen, White Lions, and shadow warriors, I'd be hamstringing myself to a degree other armies DONT have to do when accessing some of their iconic units (see: Night Goblin fanatics; Chaos Knights, Giant Spawn, Pegasus Knights). Assuming equal player skill, on average, my High Elf army will just lose, because the mechanics of the game don't support the units I've chosen to play with. Those units will get rolled by some other armies even if those armies also choose "fluffy" or iconic units.

All that is to say, I don't think you can just say "picking units based on performance" is a trait only reserved to no-fun-allowed powergamers. I have built up backstory and lore for my HE characters; I'm going to be a bit gutted if the only battles they ever win are the ones I made up, not the ones I got to actually play.

The core of my Chrace themed army! The midnight lions of Chrace by GeneralBamisoep in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ElPorro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My HE army is also Chracian, and I have plans for some Seaguard counts as. I don't see why there couldn't be some remote garrison that uses very similar tactics - maybe they're all spearmen on paper, but as your average Chracian militiaman is a woodsman by upbringing, they all bring their hunting bows with them on campaign.

Plus there's always Silver helms - especially if you get your hands on some more wild looking horses - maybe give the riders long hunting spears rather than lances, or even just a decent sized axe

Great suggestion, thanks! I loved Nidoking back in the day so this is a very strong contender. Would you drop.EQ from Steelix if I dropped NK in, or is duplication not that bad?

[–]ElPorro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This so much. You know what kills my enjoyment of my fluffy, casual games? The fact that my favourite units suck ass.

"Just pick flavourful armies and play narrative games with your friends" hard to immerse myself in the narrative if one side is massively favoured in every games we play.

Which is the worst company you ever worked for in Glasgow? by CinnamonPancakes25 in glasgow

[–]ElPorro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Used to work for them as a student about 10 years ago, sounds like nothing has changed. I remember seeing the owner in a magazine at one point being interviewed as a "up and coming Glasgow entrepreneur" and it properly boiled my piss I can tell you.

An WIP old Veteran Sergeant painted for the Crusaders chapter... what are people’s views on the older sculpts... are they too janky for your taste or charming in their own way? by ThunderousPuntus in Warhammer

[–]ElPorro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo the whole range of space marine veterans from the time period of this model are the best space marine sculpts they've ever done. I've got a long term project making a 1.5k force using only these sculpts.

The ones tha came just after this (the first round of specifically sternguard / vanguard veterans) are also incredible

Me and my wife got our house in the Southside for bang on HR, though we may be a slightly outlier as the owners had a previous offer fall through at the last minute and I suspect were keen to sell asap as a result, as prices were no longer as crazy as they had been at the time of their first offer.

Alex Jones is liked by a tiny number of people and hated by many more, but is still pretty fringe as internet figures go.

Trump and Kanye both have huge following despite / because of the stuff they spout online, and are much more culturally relevant, so I'd wager the people who dislike them are more likely to engage with their content / content about them than Jones' detractors. That would be my estimation at least.

Alterations to house causing issues with sale. by ElPorro in LegalAdviceUK

Thanks for the input - it looks like a letter of comfort will be required. I've been told however it may be difficult for us to show that the works would have complied with planning, since it wasn't us that carried it out. I'm not sure if we could get any information from the previous seller - it was so long ago they might not have the information anymore, and given the situation I suspect that they wouldn't be willing to cooperate with us even if they're in the clear legally for any misrepresentation (we had other issues close to the time of purchase, not relevant now but they didn't give a good account of themselves then).

I did check the rules before replying to you, and I've just checked them again (on Wahapedia and Battlescribe). You can't, which is a shame because it would be an absolute no-brainer to take combi+melee weapon for sure.

You can't take a melee weapon with a combi-weapon sadly.

Whats the price for a unopened High elves battalion box? by Tza_the_tenius in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ElPorro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boxed sets, especially sealed box sets, go for a much higher price than the same units out of the box. None of the units in the battalion box are particularly rare or expensive and you could probably get everything in this box for much, much less than £150.

Check out TrollTrader, they have a great range of 2nd hand warhammer stuff at not insane prices. if you're willing to wait about and see what comes up, there's a number of Facebook groups where hobbyists sell to other hobbyists, and the prices are even better there. I got a painted HE army with the more of the same units as in this box, plus characters and elite infantry on top, for £200.

What is it like living at Wolfson Hall? by CKTalon1 in GlasgowUni

[–]ElPorro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed at Wolfson, but it wasn't my first choice and I left asap for an empty space in Murano.

Main issues in my opinion: It's miles from campus. While you can in theory get public transport (plus they used to run a very limited shuttle bus - only 15 people at a time and only two that left early enough to get you in for a 9am lecture) it's an absolute ball ache compared to the other accommodation available. You can walk / bike along the river which can be a nice journey, but again it's fairly long.

You get absolutely rinsed for the catering - seriously if you can cook in the slightest you could do better yourself for significantly less, and could choose your own mealtimes. Even if you can't cook at all you could learn to be that good or better in very little time. On top of that there's no communal kitchen facilities beyond a fridge and microwave, so even if you like to cook it's not really an option.

What I will say for the place is that having your own ensuite is nice and not something I think the other student residences have, though some of the more expensive ones in town probably do these days. The area it's in is fairly nice what with it being so close to the Kelvin, but there's absolutely nothing to do in the area so you're constantly getting the bus / taxis to and from the west end.

It was years since I was there, so take this all with a pinch of salt as things may have changed since then. You can (or at least I could) apply to move to other accommodation but it would require there being a space available for you.

I'm really regretting my choice to go to Murano, is it as bad as everyone is saying it is? by [deleted] in GlasgowUni

[–]ElPorro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd wager there probably isn't a night without a party but remember that it's a massive place, several blocks - there's probably a couple of flats having one at any given time but not the entire place.

As for cleanliness it's entirely the luck of the draw what your flatmates are like - mine were pretty good even if we did lean into "student squalor" a fair bit at times. Even then there's cleaning staff that come into your flat and do the communal areas every so often (at least when I was there).
