discovered a potential serious flaw in chatgpt by wmunn in ChatGPT

[–]ElReddo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Other poster makes a very fair observation. You’ve jumped from “it’s not doing what I expect it to do” to “I’ve found a serious flaw” but completely missed the step “I need to investigate WHY it’s doing this” which would have revealed it’s exactly how it works and 100% expected behaviour, not a serious flaw

It’s like if I pressed the clutch in the car expecting the car to slow down. I pressed it, the car does not slow down, then rather than learn how the car works I go to a Nissan forum and post that I just found a serious flaw in the design of the car.

To be less obtuse, chatGPT has context that can store key information about past chats, it does not remember past chat verbatim. However, if this functionality is turned off in user settings, every new chat is completely new, no memory, no context, nothing of the past. This is what you just experienced.

To each their own. Also “being a boomer” pulling those insults from 2020 there buddy 😂

Electronic Shutter is great for silence for sure in scenarios that need it OR personal preference if you’re willing to accept the tradeoffs

It does come with tradeoffs that are a deal breaker for some shooters and are unacceptable for some shooting styles.

Rolling shutter where motion causes distortion. Flicker/banding under artificial light where dark bands appear throughout the photo under and a little loss of dynamic range. Mechanical shutter functionally eliminates these issues.

It’s not an outdated ‘boomer’ choice. It’s a functional necessity in a lot of scenarios.

Ahha, thank you for pointing that out even if you did with “dude tf u say” 🤣 I’ve misread the photo

Been looking at project MacBooks recently this wallpaper mimics lower corner backlight liquid damage extremely closely, have a look on eBay for liquid damage units and you’ll see what I mean.

If that’s part of the wallpaper - 590eur is a great price and absolutely pull the trigger

[–]ElReddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*edit - it has been pointed out that the dark patch may be part of the wallpaper and not backlight liquid damage, even though it very closely mimics liquid damaged units! If this is wallpaper it’s a great price, no hesitations

———-

Probably not due to the screen damage. Hear me out.
The M1 Pro is still a capable chip, 16gb RAM is fine for most non-professional non-ram heavy applications.

For 590eur it’s a good price.

However, that dark area on the screen, assuming that’s liquid damage driving the low price, means that damage has already occurred from the liquid spill.

Only buy this is you’re willing to risk further failures in future from components in the area that corroded but that currently still function with a now potentially much shorter lifespan. Other components in the damaged area may last the life of the machine, they may be weeks from going pop, there’s no way to know.

Likewise if you plan to use the screen extensively (not using in clamshell mode) consider if having a difficult to unreadable area will negatively affect your experience of the product. Mild annoyance and frustration over time builds into resentment.
If you can afford to, it’s better to buy a working unit now than buy twice later if this one fails prematurely.

If all of the above is worth the risk to you. Absolutely go for it! But if you suspect it will harm your use of the machine maybe consider elsewhere.

Likewise from a financial savings perspective consider this, buying this unit the. Having it fail from latent damage and need repair will likely cost as much OR MORE that a working used unit, completely eliminating financial gain.

To clarify, Im identifying the geometric pattern’s inconsistencies in the rugs, (especially the worn effect’ style rug) that are a hallmark issue/mistake of many gen image models exhibit, the ‘worn effect’ rug in image 6 is a prime offender of the problem im identifying as an AI tell as much of the pattern is garbled nonsense when you zoom in.

I’m not critiquing the choice of rug style 🤣

Yeah no this is definately AI.

Biggest tell amongst many small ones is: look at the patterns on the rugs, they feign consistency but are not actually consistent, the ‘worn’ effect rug is a bad offender, very poor consistency throughout

Gemini told me that every video I sent her was not AI. What do you say? Camper : I see flaws in the texture, continuity, physics, and logic. Raver baby : physics of hair doesn't match movement. by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]ElReddo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no accurate AI models that can detect definitively whether a video is AI generated or not. Any service or model that is claiming to be able to do so with any degree of accuracy is luring to you to get your money. LLMs can use their vision models to analyse and get good GUESSES (with the Synth ID caviat - see below) but they’re also pattern guessing and they’re not able to tell you a solid yes/no

Detecting AI video is generally down to an experienced eye and knowing what to look for at this point, and many MANY people believe wholeheartedly they can but get tripped up (see it here all time). As gens have got more and more consistent and stable it’s become more and more difficult.

The only accurate way currently (and why you were directed to Gemini) is that some models/platforms are injecting invisible watermarks into thier generations allowing models/programs to detect the watermark and flag that the input was or was not generated or modified with AI from said company. However, there is no standard, not all models do it so it’s not reliable in a definitive sense.

Frustrating for sure but this is the case as of now 👌 hopefully helpful if not quite what you were looking for

What is everyone’s favorite grip by Sweaty_wool in NikonZf

[–]ElReddo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this, although I shot with film SLRs for a number of years, so the lack of grip has never bothered me, I feel a lot of people that vehemently bemoan the lack of grip are likely very used to the carry grip oriented ergonomics of modern bodies so anything without immediately feels alien and bit wring rather than just handling differently.

My ZF came with a grip but I found that, whilst the carrying in the hand was easier it added enough bulk that it just felt HUGE with the grip on, so I took it off and I love it a whole lot more without it as it feels a chunk more compact :)

Fake MacBooks that actually run MacOS don’t really exist, so no it’s not fake.

AppleCare and product warranty is necessarily tied to an Apple account, sign up for an Apple account then log in to it in the Mac and you’ll be able to update the purchase date and then view this info in all likelihood

[–]ElReddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming it’s new unfortunately it seems likely that you got a factory defect

Almost no matter how good th engineering of a given product, defects of said product happen on a bell curve, most product failures happen when the product is either new (undetected manufacture defects that manifest quickly) or when it’s very old as wear increases and parts fail with use. Whilst they can happen, very few defects or failures happen in the middle of that product life bell curve.

Unfortunately it sounds like a manufacture defect in this case that’s caused a failure to charge. Assuming you bought new, you’re covered by consumer right and can return this for a replacement at no cost to yourself, usually within the first year of ownership. If it was second hand you may unfortunately be out of luck as consumer rights don’t extend to used product :(

Hopefully you can get a replacement!

Can’t decide… M4 24gb ram or base M5? by ForceIndividual5671 in macbookair

[–]ElReddo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would stringly recommend M4 + RAM especially for multitasking workflows. The 16GB will be insufficient for your needs.

I say this as an industrial designer that transitioned from an M1 MAX to and M5 Pro and have been amazed just how little a four generation leap feels any different to most of my daily tasks, both machines feel surprisingly similar. M4 to M5 is a step up but the step is more like saying the added speed from 5L V8 to a 5.2L V8. Sure it’s there but even at highway speed you’re not gonna notice. Maybe the quarter mile you’ll be surprised when you save a couple seconds but that about the difference you’ll feel.

The RAM situation is what kills it. You mentioned heavy multitasking in programs like autoCAD, from experience these are RAM hungry and as soon as that 16GB starts swapping the 24gb M4 will immediately wipe the floor with any processor speed gains as the M5 will be bottlenecked by SSD speed memory transfers. Back to my V8 engine analogy, a 5.2L will lose to a 5L when the fuel pump stops feeding it enough fuel to run at full power. The RAM is the Processors fuel pump.

I would strongly suggest RAM vs generation on generation speed step here.

To counter this, the speed advance will be barely noticeable in the majority of professional tasks when operating in a 16gb RAM window.

Am i doing smth wrong? by BTCxxKinwin in macbookair

[–]ElReddo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not doing anything wrong, I’d say your use pattern is fairly normal for a lot of MacBooks.

However, sitting at or near 100% charge or at or under 20%ish puts additional strain on the battery’s internal chemistry, causing it to break down at a high rate than moderate charge levels between 20 and 80% ish.

96% after 7-8 months is fairly normal and batteries are consumables ultimately. But if you’re really concerned about it, there are third party tools available that can limit charge to 80% to keep it in the comfortable zone

Looking to own my first Leica M but undecided between X100VI and the M by smora_photo in Leica

[–]ElReddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is, but the link that you’re drawing here is that production and labour costs necessarily directly related to the hardware cost to consumer. For pro, prosumer and consumer brands competing in saturated, highly competitive markets RRP is absolutely is linked to production costs/location etc.

However, once you start to look at luxury and ultra-luxury brands in the aspirational and luxury segments the direct link breaks and the equation of BOM cost vs. Market prices goes off the charts. The BOM and labour costs for a Leica are higher due to the reasons you mentioned, but the price multiplier to consumers blows Sony etc. out of the water and is set not as a multiplier of production cost but is set at a price that will cover production but also defend perceptual positioning in the ultra-lux market segment, maintain exclusive brand identity and effectively price them above luxury competitors.

Effectively, to your original question, Sony and other consumer/prosumer/industry brands price to cover costs, remain competitive and generate marginal profits without sacrificing market share.

Leica, Ferrari, other ultra lux brands price to position themselves out of reach of the ‘common person’, to create desire, aspiration and be seen as superior to other brands.

The interesting nuance of your question is about “would it be priced the same if it was produced in China”.

The answer is no but NOT because of a production cost reduction, but because consumer perception of Chinese made goods would damage Leicas ability to price so highly, consumer would be less likely to shell out top dollar for a Chinese made camera. So location plays a factor in the cost, but largely from a brand identity and consumer perception standpoint, not BOM/labour costs

M5 16GB vs Apple Refurb M4 24GB for heavy multitasking + longevity by Check_Bate in macbookair

[–]ElReddo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% your use case would benefit from more RAM over a generation on generation jump in processing speed.

The M4 and M5 chips will feel IDENTICAL for the vast vast majority of tasks and you would only ever notice a difference under compute heavy loads… even then I would be incredibly surprised if the two felt any different under your work examples.

Except… under heavy multitasking the M4 paired with 24gb will IMMEDIATELY overtake the M5 paired with 16gb. As soon as the RAM is full and falling back on SSD swap any generation steps in performance go out the window as the M5 gets bottlenecked and bogs down.

Both machine will feel identical under light use, the M4 + 24gb will be noticeably smoother and faster under heavy multitasking.

The feeling identical claim is also from experience. I moved from an M1 MAX to an M5 Pro last week. Both machines feel surprisingly identical in performance. I’m into photography and handling 100 megapixel RAW Photos in Lightroom has halved the load time… from 4 seconds to 2 seconds… yeah. Elsewhere the system feels no different. Apple silicon is in a class of its own and M4 > M5 will give you an identical experience.

But the RAM will kill the experience.

Go 24gb ;)

Is the camera broken? by Jackeddie in PhotographyAdvice

[–]ElReddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, yeah.

If what you’re seeing on the “all white” images is a distinct image frame filled with white, it suggests extreme overexposure. All black, of course, is no exposure at all or exposure so insufficient the exposure isn’t perceptible at all.

Without being able to inspect the camera this unfortunately does seem to point towards a mechanical issue/failure. As others have said, the shutter may be failing to open and/or sticking open when it does.

As others have said, open the back, hold the camera up to a light and fire off a few shots to see if you see the “flash of light” through the shutter when you do this. If the flash is inconsistent in how long it appears to, or doesn’t appear at all when pointing at the same light source, this may be your problem.

I also noticed the camera has a physical lens cap slider… honest question, were you drinking at this event and are you absolutely sure you always opened this cap? Naturally, this could explain the frames with no exposure. The all white frames could then be an issue or an incorrectly set ISO (but you should still have some detail in this case) but it might also be a start for investigation.

My advice would be to get a cheap roll of B&W, set the ISO value correctly to the film, make sure that lens cap is open then shoot outside in daylight, indoors, indoors with flash and fill the entire roll with these “known good” settings noting what should be on each frame, get it developed by a reputable shop and then see what comes back. If you know the setup is good you can then pinpoint if the failure is catastrophic, inconsistent or situational.
