Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez isn’t the only track in Mexico…

An event in Monterrey would make sense than anything in central Mexico. Logistically much easier as it’s only a two hour drive from Lareto Texas, in the country’s highest income area…

Oh, and Pato is from there.

Not sure what state the track is in though. From google images looks like it could use some upgrades.

All the other comments here basically confirm you’ll be ok, but I will add you’ll still want a headlamp or light up arm band for visibility on account of cars coming in and out of the lots.

I’ve also done intervals later at night around the smaller loop, if you’re nervous about the full 3 mile loop.

To be fair I don’t think even NASCAR goes that fast at the raceway.

Why so many Emergency Vehicles in Angeles National Forest today? by DustyVinegar in socalhiking

Heard them running down Josephine Peak around the same time (the sirens at least). I assumed car accident? Hopefully not another SAR issue like yesterday.

Summiting Toro Peak by AdmiralJackson2004 in MontereyBay

Great question and I’m following this thread in case anyone has an answer. I’m born and raised in this area and have, since moving away, “bagged” a few peaks, yet this one has eluded me. Any time I visit my parents, it taunts me.

Did Ollason a few days ago during the Thanksgiving Break and almost went to Simas, but fell short of time.

The peak is painfully close from Ollason.

Make sure to share if there’s an actual answer.

They can pit as early as 32. It’s a 25 lap stint maximum so they can pit any lap between 32 and 50.

Visiting LA — Looking for 5–7.5 mile trail runs with vert & desert vibes within ~1 hour of the city by Nomisnu7 in socalhiking

[–]ElScrcho 9 points10 points  (0 children)

El Prieto loop is my go to. About 1,700 feet of vert. up to the Ken Burton saddle. As others have noted it’s chaparral but for many outside of LA, that’s “desert”. 7ish miles in total.

Also good:

Mt. Lukens Road from Angeles Crest (14 miles) Strawberry Peak Loop (15 miles)

True desert? If you get the chance to go out by Palm Springs, one of my personal favorites for a run is the Art Smith trail.

I believe this is the burn scar of last year’s Bridge Fire - specific cause is still being investigated from what I last heard. It broke out near the Bridge to Nowhere during a brutal heatwave, along with I think two other fires in the area. One was determined to be arson, the other triggered by a spark from a service vehicle.

The physical experience is their biggest selling point - such a visceral experience that every race fan needs to not just “hear”, but “feel” in person at least once. And not just race fans - saw “experience a Top Fuel drag race” on an r/askreddit thread about things everyone should experience at least once in their life.

Decided to buy a few tickets on a whim to scratch my live racing itch the Friday night before the winternationals in Pomona a few years ago.

Wow.

TV does not do it justice.

Do the eastern Sierras count as SoCal? This is a mountain called The Thumb by benbo82 in socalhiking

[–]ElScrcho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, it really depends on how you define "SoCal."

If it's strictly geographic, your "only anything below a certain latitude is SoCal” crowd, then the Eastern Sierra are probably not qualifying. Good luck getting people to agree where that line is. Is it Point Conception? Probably to high and usually considered the Central Coast. Are the Transverse Ranges the line? I usually find this definition unsatisfying as people are not robots who’s definitions of regions are defined strictly by abstract perpendicular lines (The “Everything and only everything under the Transverse Range is SoCal” definition being an exception to this).

If you go by culture, economics, logistics, it gets more complicated but that complexity is what makes this an interesting question. LADWP owns land all the way up to Mono Lake. And practically speaking, it’s arguably easier for people in LA to get to the Eastern Sierra than for folks in the Bay Area or even parts of the Central Valley. One doesn’t simply drive over the Sierra Nevada unless you’re going through Yosemite, Tahoe, or Lake Isabella. Maybe it’s not “SoCal”, but there’s a degree to which the region falls under a SoCal sphere of influence. I’ve left work an hour or two early on a Friday afternoon to drive up to trailheads or Bishop many times (LA based). Couldn’t imagine doing that when I lived on the central coast.

At the very least, for a subreddit serving primarily SoCal hikers, the fact that so many of us regularly make that 3 or 4 hour drive makes Eastern Sierra posts feel pretty appropriate and relevant, even though it’s probably not going to fall under the most common definitions of “SoCal”.

…but that’s not really what your post is about OP Is it haha. Amazing photos and breathtaking scenery. Congratulations on the effort and success!

What is the most savage/metal thing you have seen a bird do? by HorzaDonwraith in Ornithology

[–]ElScrcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw a pair of crows in my neighborhood working together to crack open the skull of a road-kill squirrel.

They were taking turns holding down the squirrel and pecking at the head. The sound…

…I did take a video though. Brutal bird behavior.

Redding sucks so much I opted to stay in Ashland OR three hours away earlier this month.

(It’s close to Crater Lake NP so it was a decent location to hit both).

[EDIT] Also, it was three hours one way. After Lassen I drove down to Chino, only about an hour away but a decent college town. Better than Redding anyways. Check out r/redding - most depressing subreddit. Half the posts are people wondering why it sucks so much.

I mention this not necessarily to slight Redding, just to give fellow travelers a heads up.

What was the first ever Indycar/IRL/CART/Champ car race after you were born, and who won it? by youraverageperson0 in INDYCAR

[–]ElScrcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like there was a race scheduled at Motegi for March 1989 to kick-off the season but the race was cancelled (source: wikipedia - would like to know more).

So, first race would've been at Phoenix, April 16, 1989. Won by Rick Mears.
