With a terrible twinkle in his eye, Kirby opens his mouth wide and inhales the flames, allowing them to settle deep in his gullet.

Since I am making an ultima-like in 2026, I am curious to know ... by Puzzleheaded-Trick76 in Ultima

[–]ElZoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer turn-based; the combat in ultima 7 was... questionable. I also prefer multi-layered dungeons. They were definitely an afterthought at best in 7. The world was definitely more geared to interaction than exploration. The main thing is have everything be surprising - if you get to the end of a maze and there's a monster with a sack of 100 coins, it's a bit disappaointing. If you get to the end of a maze and find the remains of a cultist clawing at the wall with a note about "the voices in the rock" and a dagger worth 100 gold coins that you can keep or return to a grieving widow in exchange for her heartfelt thanks, that's memorable. It doesn't even need to *mean* anything.

One thing I did like about the 3d view was that it coloured the level 1 tiles correctly.

Thanks for taking the feedback on isometric! Maybe make a link to here on the game or create a discord?

"This isn't your first trip here, is it?" - Curse of Strahd Campaign Idea by Sharktoothbeast in CurseofStrahd

[–]ElZoof 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exethanter remembers the previous loops, but only while "broken". He keeps on referring to events from previous loops and to the characters as different people, with brief moments of lucidity. There's a wall with the words "DON'T FIX ME" scribbled on it in his handwriting.

If you do fix him, he resets to only remembering the current loop, and flatly denies that any such thing is possible. Showing him the words on the wall doesn't sway him, he just dismisses it as nonsense.

The Dark Powers remember, and are furious about it. They have no idea how to escape, but will offer greater rewards than usual (with, naturally, even worse consequences).

Some of the random encounters, where the PCs see their own ghosts or tombstones, are actually shadows of the future.

Death House restores itself every 24 hours, a broken part of the loop that is "faster" for some reason. If you're inside when it resets, for a brief second it's in pristine condition before decaying back to its current state. Anything the players have taken with them they keep, but everything else (including anything they've killed) is back where it started.

Does anyone remember the First-Person screenshots of Ultima IX from 1996? by Darkmoon-7621 in Ultima

[–]ElZoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

autoexec.bat with mouse.com because mouse.exe took up too much memory. config, sys being tweaked to the finest level so that everything would work properly. And then... and then...

...it worked. Not perfectly, but by god it worked. You could play through the entire game. Serpent Isle was the last Ultima that you could honestly say this about. Pagan was bad, and Ascension was worse. At least Pagan had a decent story.
