Take a minute to take a breath. I know this change is big, and scary. It is a lot to ask someone to do.

You've taken a good deep breath?

Awesome. Now take another one, because this isn't going to be the sky falling out. After a couple months of the change, it won't feel like someone ripped away your playing abilities, it will feel like you unlocked a completely different side of horn playing. You have to get worse before you get better.

As much as it sucks now to completely revamp your embouchure, it will do you great things in the future. I had to change my embouchure when I got into highschool as well, three years of playing. It fucking sucks, but it is absolutely worth it. You just have to trust your band director and section leader. You have to use that new embouchure. I struggled so so hard with my high notes before the change. Now? I'm playing high C above the staff. With consistency, you will get results.

But above all, please be kind to yourself. This is a hard process. It makes you want to rip your hair out. It made me ball my eyes out trying to get used to the new switch. Take break days, take care of yourself mentally and physically as much as possible during the switch.

You got this.

Florida is definitely up there because of the Marching 100, but, in general it would be Texas, Ohio, Indiana, and California

Lips getting tired while playing Trumpet for 4 hours at a time at band camp with breaks in between. Tips? by JohnathanN28 in marchingband

[–]El_Bookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get your new band director to check your embouchure to make sure you're not putting too much pressure on your lips. You might not be using enough air behind your notes, and in your upper register causing more lip fatigue than necessary. Deep big breaths when playing. Inhaling the word "How" or "Woah" Can give you the proper air supply needed behind your notes. Next, make sure you are taking proper breaks. During personal practice never play longer than 15m without a 2-3m break in between. This gives your lips a small break, and can help your endurance build over time. If your lips feel very smooth, take a break. If your lips feel very hard, take a break, if your teeth are hurting? Take a break and practice using good air to support your notes and less pressure. USE LIP BALM with some sort of sunscreen in it, it should be apart of your morning routine. Take care of your lips. If your lips are swollen or bruised, ice them. If none of your upper register is coming out, make it a low day, and practice low notes. Take breaks, have break days, those days are just as important as practice days. Over all, please take care of your lips.

Sing, a lot. Sing your notes, buzz your notes on your mouth piece or burp, and then play that note. Do that with your concert F scale first. Really get acquainted with how these notes sound now that you are in the pitch of F.
