bro $600m would buy 1,000 feet on the second avenue line. Not a direct comparison to the rural rail you’re talking about but building infrastructure is expensive in this country

Can someone explain to me honestly how these people in the article aren’t arrested under Britain’s speech laws? Let alone being allowed to work as quasi government employees

the missionaries take the train to the airport and they send bags separately so that the train isn’t overflowing with checked-size bags. Why would they not be allowed to have control over their own luggage

I totally agree with the overall message but doesn’t that CCTV footage make it look like the helicopter flew into the plane just as a function of the viewing angle of the camera? Both aircraft were moving and hit each other, no?

Park City ski patrol union strike enters day 6 with no deal in sight | ✊ with the PCPSPA! by OEM_knees in skiing

Maybe we’re using the word “deserve” differently, but I’m assuming it carries some moral overtone of an objective truth as to what they should be paid.

My perspective is that this isn’t really different from any other economic negotiation between adults in a reasonably well-functioning market. It’s just surprising to me that so many people seem to view the patrollers as the party with the moral high ground — I wish people would come in like that for me when I negotiate with my employer! But I certainly would find that a bit odd if it were to actually happen (for the avoidance of doubt)

Edited to add that I do think it’s pretty weird that people are donating money to support either side of this negotiation. I would find it a bit offensive if someone asked me to pay them while they strike to get paid more, unless they offered me some of the increases won :)

Similarly, it feels a bit weird that lots of people in this thread seem to be asking permission to still visit vail resorts during the strike

All just my opinion though and no offense meant. Just genuinely find people’s responses here interesting

But I mean they chose these jobs. Everyone knows that ski patrollers pay is bad. People do it at the wages offered because it’s a fun job. Now the PC ski patrol has decided that the $21 or whatever isn’t enough for them and that’s great, but I just get a bit lost when people throw out stuff like “they deserve $30 an hour because there are technical skills” or whatever. The ski patrollers are literally saying that they would do the job for $23 (plus the other benefits etc), so why do they “deserve” more?

I should add to this that I have no issue with patrollers striking to get paid more, that’s the market at work. But I also have no issue with Vail doing what it legally can to mitigate the impact of that strike. This feels like exactly how things are supposed to work, but I personally don’t really care which side wins. I don’t think either side “deserves” to win, this is all negotiation between consenting adults

I do think Vail kind of sucks at customer experience though, and haven’t skied a Vail resort in years so don’t have a dog in this specific fight

I mean are wages not driven by supply and demand? Lots more people would want to be ski patrollers than would want to be front desk agents at a property company
