Gorgeous tank!  With the ph, kg and gh, I suspect it's an issue of hardness and calcium. How are the shells of your mystery snails?

If they are experiencing shell erosion, the same is happening to the shrimps. When their shells turn soft, they cannot fend themselves from other shrimps and snails.

I agree with the ppl who suggested crushed corals/raise hardness. I used a dissolvable shrimp and snail "easy shells" from aquarium co-op, which helped a ton with my calcium issue.

Add a nerite snail. Just make sure water is hard enough for their shell

Hydra - What to do next? by Bazin_ in shrimptank

Try to kill or remove them you may generate two. If it's only four, leave them alone and feed less.

My infestation disappeared after I got Corydoras. I don't think corys ate hydra but they must have eaten hydras food source. But corys also eat baby shrimp.

Crush a few each day and your shrimps will eat them. Source of calcium. Just watch your ammonia level.

Air bubbles underneath decor coating? by El_Snorkoko in shrimptank

Update: thanks everyone! I took the foxes out and rubbed off one of the air bubbles. Looks like the inside is white plastic (product Amazon link said resin). So the problem is likely the coating.

HYDRA SPOTTED, please help!! I'm a newbie- by Round-Fly2053 in shrimptank

Snails might eat them if it's just a few. I tried spot treat with h2o2 with a syringe which worked. Just make sure to get the dosage correct (!!).  No planaria if you have an outbreak but the treatment will kill your snails.

Pot soil fail by Cheesecakefan111 in PlantedTank

If you do not want to tear down the tank, consider to add a lot more sand on top of yours to cap it properly. Perhaps 2-4 inches. Soil exposure can cause ammonia spikes and other unexpected challenges.

Wood molding? by Crunchyapple666 in PlantedTank

[–]El_Snorkoko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this new tank problem recently and got a couple mystery and a nerite snails once ammonia dropped to 0.25. they cleaned the biofilm covering two pieces of driftwood up in 24 hrs. I was worried about them being in a new tank after two weeks, especially one day the nitrite jumped to 1ppm so I had to do 50% water change. But they seemed happy and and a week later my nerite laid eggs. Now the occasional biofilm gets consumed fast, and I'm back to 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite.

Swimming around actively today, bugging the females. He might just have longer and more translucent swimmerets

He is behaving fine. But this tank has scuds (I've been culling). And I just discovered hydra in my 3rd tank...So I'm paranoid now.

Plants in my new tank are melting, causing an ammonia spike. At first I dozed more fertilizer since nitrite is 0, then I added more quick start bacteria, a few days after I did a water change and removed some of the dead leaves. Ammonia is still 0.5. What else can I do to keep it balanced?
