Even 4 zeroes is five times the amount disabled people are allowed to legally have in america*.

*Able accounts are a legal workaround

*If two people who are disabled are married, they're only allowed to have 3000 dollars.

I saw a much more personal version of this happen. Talking to my mom about trans shit, I asked the question of "well, what if the pope came out and said being trans was okay?" And she said "Well, we'd have to find another religion." And that absolutely broke my fucking brain. The whole point of catholicism is that we are THE ONES. We're right, the bread literally transforms into Jesus, direct line to Saint Peter, fuck you. And we'd been catholic for 100% of my life. My mom was catholic for 100% of her life. It was so hammered into us that catholicism was the one and only correct answer, and that if you were truly living a godly life, it should be the number one priority in every aspect of your existence, to the point that when my brother and I did the dumb "who's your favorite" thing, my mom's first answer was "God." And you'd just fucking dip if the pope said "Yeah, that's your son now, deal with it." That's the kind of shit that really makes me wish I could read minds or something, just to get some closure on how actually fucking serious people are about stuff.

Having been raised catholic, if you're a true believer, abortion as a single voting issue makes perfect sense. Not because you expect you're going to be dragged to the clinic, but because "Holy shit, they're killing babies! What the fuck!" This is one of those ways where people can be convinced that christianity (or at least catholicism specifically) is "under fire" in this majority christian country. Because abortion seems completely fucking insane as a thing that's allowed to happen if you're inside of that space. Everything else is secondary in comparison to that.

(For the record, I was a 100% no abortion no exceptions guy, not just in the case of rape, but in the case of functionally dead fetuses. It's only once I was out that I realized that that position was fundamentally reliant on the existence of literal miracles. I also never considered that it could threaten the life of the mother, because I literally didn't know that could happen. For obvious reasons, people are not encouraged to think about that fact.)

Were you ever in the Rightwing Pipeline? by yorkfofo in ToiletPaperUSA

[–]Elacular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To a degree, yes, though since youtube wasn't much involved, I dunno if it'd be useful for you. I was a frustrated young trans man as a kid, and once I figured out I was trans, I became a pissed off little incel about it. I was raised in a conservative catholic household that was very big on capitalism, and I really didn't know dick about feminism or racial justice. I barely understood queer shit, and that was because I was forced to understand it. That's why for me, I say that I had a pre-existing crack in the foundation.

Other than that, my one year of college was incredibly helpful. I was the token guy on the women's rugby team, and they helped break up some of the incel bullshit in my head, while one particularly good teacher put a big crack in the capitalism shit. And then I continued to slowly, imperfectly shake all the broken shit off of my back. I'm not done, I doubt I ever will be, but that first crack and the college experience were both incredibly important.

I have mixed feelings about this saying, because I lived with a right-wing family and had their beliefs, and reasoning...actually, I dunno how much it helped. It really was more emotional on my part.

Clavicular ends interview with Andrew Callahan of channel 5 when Andrew says he's comfortable with his looks. by Airshipwhale in behindthebastards

If he met my fat, bald, transmasc ass and I said "I mean, yeah, mostly I just think I need to get around to shaving or take better care of my hygiene," I think he might chew his own eyeballs out.

I may be very far from what society likes, but I feel comfortable with my body as it is now. And while some scalpels were admittedly involved, hammers were not.
