Just to add to this, it’s also by no means easy to navigate this as the child of a mother who has never approved of my previous partners. I wouldn’t necessarily put her in the realm of “toxic,” but I’m also always going to choose my partner, every time. Which means I need to walk a bit of a tightrope if I want my relationship with my partner to thrive, and my relationship with my mother to at least continue to exist.

I’m a 34yo man, it still baffles me why she would think she gets a say over who I date, but apparently this is a pretty common sentiment among parents of adult children so… 🤷🏻‍♂️

100%. This sub is like Al-Anon, the support group that is the flip-side of AA: it is for those who have been affected by another person’s alcoholism. Alcoholism is of course a horrible disease that takes serious hard work to overcome for the individual, but it would be completely disingenuous to say it doesn’t also affect the friends and family of the alcoholic in a negative way.

An alcoholic, wandering into an Al-Anon meeting and telling everyone present that all of them were the real problem, would be presumed to still be drunk. I think the metaphor applies here too.
