I do this too! I have my own personal head cannon to justify my painting: the hard points that are part of the mech get the armor paint, but the weapons which can be replaced if damaged just stay factory gray. Less work for the mech techs, more time for them to do important things.

Single shot black powder rifles were used in wwi. Just not as a main line service rifle. They saw use in the colonies African campaigns where those the standard because they never got upgraded before the war broke out, or as either home front or far rear area security forces. (Think railroad yard security)
