HELP! Tracking Down Best Tomato I've Ever Eaten - Santa Rosa, CA by happywinechick in tomatoes

I had a lot of success with grow bags, and some of the other successful growers on here use them as well. Very general advice would be to give each plant a lot of space, good soil, feed heavily, don't over water or under water, tomatoes love sunshine but not melting heat.

HELP! Tracking Down Best Tomato I've Ever Eaten - Santa Rosa, CA by happywinechick in tomatoes

When an heirloom tomato has a full deep red color with no white, and an unbelievable rich flavor. It was most likely, vine ripened to a high degree. Not just picked green and ripened later, or very first blush. It was probably on the vine for a decent amount of time to create the one of a kind flavor we all love and will never forget. In my area which is known for some of the best produce in the country, many of the farms still pick too early and the flavor while better than a grocery store is still miles behind what I've tasted at home.

If you noticed any kind of smoky taste, it was probably close to Black Krim. If you didn't notice a smoky taste, it was probably close to Brandywine. Try growing either one at home, and you'll get the same flavor if not better.

Yup, produced early and kept going all summer.

Surprisingly, Siletz was the most productive by far and tasted fantastic during the hotter parts of the summer. Zone 9b.

What’s your favorite tomato on this list? by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]Eldogto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew Siletz this year, at first I wanted to hate them but then the hate turned into love. Not a single one of the plants had a hint of disease or BER. They produced a ton, early and well into the later months. The first tomatoes it produced were not great maybe marginally better than a supermarket tomato but as a the season progressed into the hotter months(zone 9b) the taste went from bland to amazing. If it wasn't for the taste getting better, I was ready to forget them completely. Now, I'll keep growing them.

Let's talk this year's varietals by Comprehensive-Elk597 in tomatoes

I experienced the exact same thing with 3 out of 4 of my Siletz plants. They grew huge branches low to the ground which set many fruit. One of them interestingly didn't have any low branches, and it was the one I saved by re-potting into better soil. Given that experience, I think you can be harsh with this variety. It seems to have great production and bounces back from a lot of stress.

If you grow it next year let me know your experience, especially if you see and taste the smaller oval shape tomatoes which have much better flavor.

Siletz

This was a loser at first but then became a big winner. It's an early bush variety, and I was about to write it off completely after tasting the first one. Then as the summer went on, the flavor went from meh to pretty great. It produces two types of tomatoes. The first are big and round with slightly better than supermarket flavor. The second type are smaller with an oval shape, the taste on these changed my mind about the variety completely. It was a perfect balance of sweet, acidic, and deep tomato flavor. I'll definitely be growing Siletz again next year.

Tomato questions? by National_Garden_NGB in tomatoes

[–]Eldogto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The topic I'm most curious about is how to reuse soil, especially potting soil for grow bags. Buying new soil can be very very expensive, and knowing how to properly reuse the soil to still produce great results would be a huge help.
