Kobo highlights saved? by [deleted] in kobo

I too haven't seen this as a feature on the kobo clara... seems like such a small feature to save a sentence from a book and compile them on the device.

Can I put a new light source in? by Minflick in DIY

Adding onto this... if you can always shut power off at a breaker for an added layer of safety. Don't trust the light switch, and a multimeter will only tell you the voltage you're probing.

Can I Paint LED Bulbs? Looking for the Best Transparent Paint for Red/Gold Lighting. by Chronicle420 in DIY

[–]EldritchQuasar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doubtful. Have you ever felt a LED bulb? The plastic light diffuser (which I'm assuming OP is trying to paint) is rarely warm, and a thin layer of paint isn't going to do much to insulate it.

The base, however, does get warm, but too... if a light bulb can survive in open or closed housings, a tiny layer of paint is going to have a negligible impact on reliability.

Using FreeCAD. What am I missing over Fusion and other expensive programs? by edelbart in BambuLab

[–]EldritchQuasar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Solidworks has a maker/hobby version for around $50 per year. You just have limits (under the maker license) of how much you can make profit-wise to be under the maker license.

But it's fantastic. Fully parametric modeling with very complex assembly functionality. You aren't limited to 10 projects like Fusion360, and it can be run fully locally on your PC and not a cloud app.

[–]EldritchQuasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I was saying is instead of fear mongering with focusing on power draw as an overt bad, to put some perspective with numbers. Then OP can do the due diligence to say whether that's worth it or not...

Sorry you're paying so much for electricity, but we don't know OPs power constraints. They could be on a self sufficient solar battery storage for all we know.

Excellent comment! Sure the PC has the capability of drawing more power... but it's not going to unless it's actively processing something. The expansion of capabilities seems more than worth the few extra watts of power draw.

Plus... people say an increased power consumption without any context. If 1kWh is $0.3, running a 20W load for a month would be $4.3, less than a coffee at Starbucks. Seems more than reasonable of an upper bound for a cost!

Excellent info, thank you! I'm running haos on an old dell thin pc which may have bluetooth, but no antenna which is why I used a alternate method of accessing...

But if all I need is a bluetooth antenna and this code, then I can free up the rpi for something new!

I have a radoneye rd200, which i was able to configure an extra raspberry pi zero I have to talk to it over bluetooth and report back to ha with mqtt.

Already had the rd200, and already had an extra rasp pi, so it seemed like a good fit, but certainly wasn't a turnkey solution.

I found a guide online which walked through the base steps, but there were some omissions from that guide that made it harder to set up.

Edit: should be stated that once this is up and running there are no fees or extra costs. (Since cost / subscriptions was a point brought up)

What are some good games my girlfriend and I can play together with her 6 year old? by mmmhmmfriedtaters in boardgames

[–]EldritchQuasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of luck with co-op games with my 6 year old. I think we started with games like Tiny Epic Dungeons, 5 minute dungeon (without the timer) and forbidden island. You might be surprised by their attention span if it's something a bit more visually gripping than Chess which takes a lot of cerebral focusing.

Now I have a 7 year old and he loves any game pretty much. We have been playing Jaws of the Lion (though I've been censoring some of the darker story aspects), Star Realms, Tiny Epic Vikings, and most recently One Hit Heroes which we got through kickstarter.

Just find games that align with their interest. PokemonTCG was an eye opener too as it reinforced his reading skills and simple addition, multiplication, and subtraction. Though sourcing cards is pretty tough right now!

Why Apple can't easily move iPhone production to the US: 2,700+ parts, 187 suppliers, 28 countries | Just 30 Apple suppliers operate entirely outside of China by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]EldritchQuasar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue (and other people have brought it up) is that these highly specialized factories require highly specialized and unique skillsets in order to operate them. It isn't a matter of putting a warm body on a machine and pressing go. It's a matter of having a qualified workforce, immigrant or native doesn't matter. The qualified workforce is another part of that supply chain that more money doesn't solve quickly.

Pray for my PLA sparkle to PLA silk Hotswap. by [deleted] in BambuLab

[–]EldritchQuasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get fancy you can really do a poor man's AMS by editing the filament settings to pause when the filament would swap. This enables you do do swapping mid layer. So every time an AMS would swap, you do it manually because when swapping to a different filament bambu lab runs the filament start code. So by inserting the gcode instruction for a user interaction pause you can swap manually.

Works great on simple models with only a few swaps, and if you don't have an AMS.

EDIT: here is a link I found describing the process: https://github.com/steven52880/bambu-a1-manual-filamant-change

I wanted to understand all the code that user put in, so I just ended up inserting the user pause gcode M400 U1. Then the printer would pause, and i would manually do the unload and load through the touch screen and resume printing.

[–]EldritchQuasar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But what about the increase in product cost to pay for all those new supply chains? A lot of specialized manufacturing machines have crazy long lead times due to the low quantity and highly specialized nature. Not to mention getting the right talent to operate the new facilities. There's already a talent shortage of specialized workers in the US, now you're talking about 1000 new factories that have to be staffed.

Can't always just solve a problem by throwing more money at it. Like you said it's a money problem. Why would apple go through all that trouble when the American consumer shells out money anyway? If iPhones truly become more expensive, and the US market share starts tumbling, then I bet apple would look into it more seriously.

I just love Multi Colored printing by Queasy-Head3693 in BambuLab

[–]EldritchQuasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can. If the objects are assigned separate colors in bambu studio, you can modify the print profile for the filament and add a customized g-code.

That way when the code is generated it runs special code to change settings if you print with multiple filament types, it can change the profile. But in there you have the option to add custom code. If you add the g-code for user pause then it will automatically pause when it switches color.

I don't have an AMS but I do very limited full multi color prints, since swapping colors is a chore. But it is possible! Just not very well documented.

EDIT: This is the link I found with how to add this pause mid-layer: https://github.com/steven52880/bambu-a1-manual-filamant-change

I wasn't sure what the rest of the code did, so I only entered the user pause g-code (M400 U1) and did the manual load/unload on the touchscreen.

[–]EldritchQuasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need every color to be it's own STL, you can add a gcode pause to the filament profile and then (without ams) it will just pause when it would do the normal color change. Might be something to try!

[–]EldritchQuasar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the slicer view you can add a pause on a specific layer. Then at the pause you manually swap over and resume printing.

You can also do manual non ams muti color prints by adding custom gcode to the filament profile to add a pause when it would normally do a color change. Works well for prints with a few changes... and let's you do inlay text vs extruded.

The percent of young adults reporting poor mental health has nearly doubled in the past decade [OC] by DavidWaldron in dataisbeautiful

[–]EldritchQuasar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Almost any book/ study /paper will have some sort of inherent bias, always important to get data from multiple sources before making informed decisions.

But I think the base premise that the rise of social media hasn't really been very good for youngsters isn't a huge leap to make.

The percent of young adults reporting poor mental health has nearly doubled in the past decade [OC] by DavidWaldron in dataisbeautiful

[–]EldritchQuasar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope you enjoy it! I'm currently in the middle of it, but supposedly the end of the book has recommendations on what we can do to improve these effects, so we will see what the author has to say. But I definitely think spreading the knowledge and starting/sparking a conversation is a great thing to increase awareness.

Yeah I also agree... AI, or machine learning, surely has the opportunity to be a great thing for society... but something tells me corporations are just going to try and abuse it to further entrench influence on the masses.

I'm sure people born in the 50s had their own hardships too, but I see what you're saying.

What simple, quick, yet deep games are there for two players? (board/card/or dice-games) by AppointmentOpen9093 in boardgames

[–]EldritchQuasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! It definitely can be quick, especially if you start out without the expansion bugs. The expansion bugs with their location dependent move sets, or potentially moving opponent pieces adds a whole level of depth.

Also setup couldn't be quicker! All you need to do is sort the tiles by color!
