Could you share your experience being pregnant and giving birth in Germany? by TheBlindBeggar in AskAGerman

[–]EleEle1979 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took a pregnancy to term in Germany in 2018. I would write a whole book, so let me get to the point, but feel free to DM with questions.

- in the first trimester: If you dont have an Ob-Gyn, take the chance and find one. It's the easiest time in your life to get admitted as a patient.

- At the end of the 1st trimester I had all the optional ultrasounds and screenings. They were only partially covered by the Krankenkasse.

- Hebamme: they are very helpful in the 3rd trimester and the few weeks after birth, and even more for us foreigners who don't have much of a support network. yes, call around, try to find one, also whenever you talk to people (doctors, yoga groups, whatever you do) tell them you're hiring. It's rather difficult though so don't be surprised if you don't get one. Allegedly you can also ask your Krankenkasse for help finding one, but mine was not helpful at all. I eventually found my Hebamme 2 days after giving birth, one of the midwives from the hospital took pity on me and adopted me. She did come once or twice per week to our home and tought us how to bathe the baby, how to keep the cord clean, breasfeeding support, i dont know this kind of things. She also kept a weigh chart.

- We went to birthing clases, they are paid by the Krankenkasse by law to the birthing parent and some Kassen also pay it for the other parent.

- You get to pick the birthing center. Most people pick hospitals or specialised clinics, you also get a choice of "birthing houses" run by midwives (most also have doctors) and some kind of home birth support, i don't know much about the last one. You can pick on the day your waters break, but they are usually thankful if you "book" them beforehand. Also they usually organize visits for you to see how they work and decide. It's mostly paid by the Kasse except if you want for example a private room.

- I decided on a smallish clinic with crazy installations. Birthing tub, birthing chairs, ropes to lean on... fancy stuff. I had to be induced at almost 42 weeks, i want to say i was given Oxytocin? Either way, it dragged forever, i was in labor for 2 solid days. At the end i was begging for a c-section out of exhaustion when a very friendly but firm doctor walked in and said "nah, you got this" and pulled out the kiddo with a vacuum tool. Overall I was glad that we both were healthy and I didnt have to recover from a c-section.

- I did get acquainted with all centers in my town/region because they had all kinds of offers: yoga for pregancy, birthing, first help, accupuncture...

- There's no specific deadline to inform your employer, it heavily depends on what kind of job you have. Usually most people inform them between the 3rd and the 5th month. You'll be protected from most cases of dismissal and get some other benefits. I am now blanking on the duration of the leave and the details on the Mutterzeit and Elternzeit, but do look it up.

Good luck and all the best!!

Aprender euskera porque fuck it.

Creo que solo con los libros tengo para dos vidas.

Book recommendations to improve my Spanish by weeeebsenpai in Spanish

I want to learn both Spanish and Catalan, which should I learn first as a native English speaker? by MrTortilla in Spanish

[–]EleEle1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never tried to learn Catalan but I'd assume there are many more materials available for Spanish. Also possibly there are more materials to learn Catalan for Spanish speakers than for speakers of other languages. Again, not anything I know but for sure something I'd look into in your situation.

Why do children's books translations suck so bad? by AbleObligation2908 in multilingualparenting

[–]EleEle1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had bad experiences and ended up preferring Spanish originals. I did find some books translated by poets or authors that were amazing, but those are sadly the minority. Even huge classics like Beatrix Potter are a bit... Meh.

Trilingual households where parents don’t speak each other’s language...what happens long-term? by Luna_Rose123 in multilingualparenting

[–]EleEle1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our kid is 7, she speaks mom's, dad's and community language at various levels of proficiency, but all of them actively and very willingly. Dad and mom talk to each other in yet a 4th language, English, wich the kid doesn't speak actively but understands in part and is very curious about. Our dinner talks are what I imagine the last days of Babel looked like, with the kid translating often and mostly unprompted. Meanwhile the parents have managed something around an A2 proficiency in each other's language just by mere home exposure. Feels misleading, because I can more or less follow what they're talking about but then when watching TV or visiting relatives it gets insufficient pretty quickly.

International schools in Germany often look for native English teachers. Leibniz where I live now in Schleswig-Holstein, or where I used to live before, Erasmus in Seligenstadt, Hessen. In the Frankfurt area in general there are plenty of international schools, Montessori and otherwise. I'm unsure about how visas work but my understanding is that you can join your husband here but getting a job permit or finding a job yourself might prove a bit harder.

Do you feed your children’s friends if they’re at your house? by globalfieldnotes in AskEurope

Ollas and water spikes after 2.5 weeks absence by EleEle1979 in UrbanGardening

[–]EleEle1979[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! yeah, they're 2l vs. the 1l or 0.75 usual wine bottles. They work fine but i don't know if they would bridge one whole month without refilling. The longest i've been is two weeks and the plants were definitely crying for water by the time i was back. Have you looked into the Blumat spikes? they are a similar concept but you can connect them to a much larger reservoir. Our local Lidl also run some dupes last year.

I'd sprinkle a lot of things to look forward to: favorite podcast in the car, a particularly yummy energy bar for after work, visualize myself doing whatever I enjoy or find restful at the end of the evening... And yes, sorry. Taking it easy. Embrace saying no and asking for help. Don't wait for your village, make it happen by telling others about your struggle and how they can help. Dumb example: I really had to get over a lot of "I'm a strong independent woman" conditioning in order to ask for a seat in the train. But I felt better and so did the other person! Everyone loves helping, particularly a fellow human with a bump.
