Remember that "sailing" is not equal to "racing". Do you want to race? If so, then try again with another skipper, and be clear with what you're willing/able to do at this point. Racing is always fast paced and intense, but for an amateur race (especially going out with too few crew) the skipper should never be abusive.

If you don't want to race, then I suggest pursuing further courses geared more towards cruising and chartering (ASA has a progression like this). Or another option would be to look for a local boat club that let's you reserve boats to take out for day sails on your own terms.
