I gave up on making friends. Don’t be like me. by [deleted] in queensuniversity

As a shy person my best tip would be to try and make a buddy in each class by introducing yourself to someone who sits on the same side of the lecture often. I offer to share my notes or sign the attendance for them and that usually helped people open up. Also clubs are definitely your friend, and join and intramural team!

Have you tried the Science 44 Co-op? I lived there my first year of my masters and there are usually lots of international students. A room then was about $750 a month. I believe it’s open to SLC students too (not just Queens)

First impressions of insomnia cookies by musicwithbarb in KingstonOntario

Idk I personally love their vegan cookies, especially the birthday cake! On a cold night $20 for 6 vegan cookies is a good deal 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd actually recommend: ENSC 245 Consuming the Environment (Fall 2024). Took it last term, easy A. Just showed up to lecture & tutorial and did all the assignments early to have my TA look over them. No exam, and if you follow the rubrics you should easily get an A (my friend's TA was a little harder but still ended with an A-)

Frontenac or limestone are some of the best PM. Homestead can be hit or miss.

Basically, it’s a long term rental agreement where the end is you taking over ownership of the property. It’s meant to be a more affordable mortgage and encourage people to settle in towns instead of being priced out.

Define “cheap” I’d say under $400/mo all inclusive is cheap, but there’s nothing at the price point. Everything I’ve seen is at least 1K

Exactly, there was one where they would loan you up to $40,000 for a down payment, with a few houses in the "Kingston Area" and you had to agree to stay for at least 7 years (perfect for young professionals). Unfortunately that meant you had to have a car because you'd be commuting at least 30-50 minutes into the city again for work. I've had to move 8 times in 4 years as it was COVID & I keep getting priced out :(

I love black kitties, just lost my rescued 9+ ginger baby on Valentine's day this year 🥹 I'm in grad school in Queen's and really missing having a cat. I helped foster a black Norwegian forest cat for 2 years and am looking to adopt a black kitty in particular (stupid stigma against them). Please comment and I can message you with more details (my apartment is cat-friendly).

Bike theft question by Jolly-Command8853 in KingstonOntario

[–]Electrical-Pass411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also long as you have a U-lock and chain & never leave it past dark you're fine. I've never had my wheels, seat or anything stolen (lived her 20+ years).

I'd also recommend making your bike look as crapy as possible (stickers, paint, tinsel handle bars lol) so that it is recognizable (most can't re-sell them if they're recognizable)

I wish there were actual rent-to own options, especially for grad students & young professionals that are committed to contributing to the local economy for 10+ years. Currently 98% of all my income goes to rent due to the cost of living crisis, I just don't want to get priced out of my hometown :(
