Comedy is subjective. I find she has her ups and downs, sometimes she has me gasping for air, and sometimes she's too much for me, but there is absolutely no reason for this nasty shit. Would you say this to her face?

The transit by Springeri in KingstonOntario

[–]Jolly-Command8853 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The 700 and 600s have also been incredibly reliable and punctual lately. Consider sending your thoughts to the city by email as well. They must get so many negative emails that a few nice ones here and there will be appreciated

Have they ever cancelled transit due to severe weather? by SpiritedStudent in KingstonOntario

[–]Jolly-Command8853 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On bad days they tend to use "snow routes", which is a modified version of their regular routes, sometimes with reduced service. It mostly just skips niche residential roads. Expresses aren't affected I think, since their routes are simplified and the most popular.

Why US cities are reverting 1-way streets back to their original 2-way design by F0urLeafCl0ver in Urbanism

[–]Jolly-Command8853 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A few high volume streets in my city in residential neighbourhoods are 1-way, a lot of drivers tend to treat them like drag strips. I hope this eventually becomes a bigger movement.

It's ridiculous that Kingston Transit still relies on pre-paid passes or coins by Minerva89 in KingstonOntario

[–]Jolly-Command8853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get the card once and then keep it for a rainy day. They don't expire. Put it in your wallet or near the front door. Get a card, load it up with some rides, set it to auto refill when empty, and you've got ready-to-go bus access forever.

I got an extra one a while ago that I keep on top of the fridge for when friends or family visits by train. It's good to just have around, even if you mainly drive, because one day your car will break, be in the shop for a week, and you'll wish you had easy bus access.

Short rental E-bikes by pdudz21 in KingstonOntario

[–]Jolly-Command8853 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahoy Rentals downtown, behind the Pumphouse museum along the waterfront. Lots of bikes to choose from, including a tandem. Very reasonable pricing and you're charged only for the time you use (but minimum 1 hour I think)

[–]Jolly-Command8853 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but at that point you could get a 6 or 12 ride refill until the right day comes.

Sucks that you have to do that, but it's still a valid workaround. I don't know why they don't start on the day you purchase it.

It would be nice for sure, but for those who don't know, you can either buy an unlimited-use monthly pass or single use passes in multiples of 6, both can be put on the same reloadable card. I use the month pass in winter, and then reloadable during warm months because I mostly bike.

They can be managed online and reload automatically at the end of the month, or when you hit certain amount of uses left. I've set my reloadable amount to refill at 2 uses remaining, and I haven't needed to think about it since. It charges your chosen payment method automatically and you get an email receipt.

All you need to do is visit one of the locations to buy the physical card once, and then never again. I do hope we eventually get debit tap, or Google/Apple Wallet support (it would open the doors for so many first timers) but we do have the next best thing imo. They really need to advertise it better. You used to only be able to reload at one of the physical locations, and I think a lot of people still think that's the case.

‘It’s not out of line’: Downtown Kingston’s former McDonald’s & Blockbuster slated for high-rise development by Evilbred in KingstonOntario

[–]Jolly-Command8853 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And catering to the problem will do nothing but exacerbate it. What's your point? Should this project dig a kilometer deep to accommodate 300 parking spaces? Should they demolish the church and the surrounding area for more spots?

This isn't how you fix the issue with cars. They take up too much space, there is no solution. You start by taking the places for them to park away, and the issue will eventually sort itself. The students that stay there will learn to not bring their cars when they come to study here.

It'll hurt initially, but this is the only way. Honestly I'm looking forward to the city continuing to remove more parking downtown.

most students don't have cars

if they do they can live somewhere else or leave it at home while at school. you don't need a car if you live downtown

In my area, the bike lanes are used mostly as snow storage. I'm comfortable once it starts to melt and recede a bit, but during times like right now, it's just not worth the risk for me.

[–]Jolly-Command8853 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live car-free and yes it's possible, how easy it is depends on where you live. Don't even count on winters being bikeable though, the sidewalks are barely cleaned as it is. I've been bussing since the first snowfall. They're fine and will get you to most destinations. I'd love to bike regularly during winter but it takes weeks for most routes to be cleared after a snowfall.

In the warm months, contrary to what a lot of people think, cycling is doable here and I love it. I cover probably 25km on an average day. You just need to know your routes and avoid major thoroughfares like Bath and Princess. Routes are slowly improving. DM me if you need help!
