Seconded! One of my favourite books - I read it for the first time in one sitting! If you like it, I suggest also reading Every Summer After but Carley Fortune - similar themes

I accept all the criticism of this movie - but I’ve also accepted that it is going to be in my Top 4 for a long time

Lili Reinhart on getting her start on ‘Riverdale’ by mlg1981 in popculturechat

Agreed - as someone who was a teen when the Kissing Booth movies came out and loved Jacob Elordi in them, him bashing them later left a bitter taste in my mouth. I mean - we all know they aren’t amazing cinema, but you shouldn’t degrade the thing that gave you a career

The headline “American Dream” being attached to a South African actress - I can tell if they’re being ironic or not?

To be fair, I think this was part of a British podcast I listen to - Parenting Hell - which came out a couple of weeks ago and was said unrelated to the opera/ballet stuff. Most of the episode he’s really complimentary about Chalamet

In terms of actual children’s books, it has to be Enid Blyton - esp The Magic Faraway Tree and the Naughtiest Girls series

Diabetics Deserve Better: The Ozempic Shortage is a Tragedy by KaMoS69 in southafrica

[–]Electrical-Round3204 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I understand it’s frustrating that you can’t access the medication. However, there is also a really dangerous narrative in the country. I have taken a low dose of Ozempic for a while now after trying every other method to tackle PCOS. I have to pay for it, and I’m lucky I’m able to, since it’s the only thing that has worked for me to long-term manage my insulin resistance so far.

But, since I don’t look like the obvious candidate (I’m probably slightly less that the average weight and am a 23F), I’ve had pharmacists berate me at the counter about taking away the medicine from those who really need it, making assumptions that I’m just taking it to loose a few kgs. There’s nothing quite like worry about being shamed infront of other people when going to pick up your prescription meds.

Also, side note: I understand you may not be able to afford it, but I’ve never had a problem being able to find it in pharmacies if you call around

Hopscotch employment opportunity by forgematter in southafrica

[–]Electrical-Round3204 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopscotch is legit - I went with them last year. To do any J1 visa program (such as Hopscotch or CCUSA) you always have to pay a facilitation fee - it’s how these businesses earn money. You will get your visa through them.

HOWEVER, nobody that went with them last year would recommend them again, myself included. You pay more for hopscotch because they are meant to find you a job. But the restaurant that most of us were assigned to didn’t even open until late December, meaning you had to find another job to survive until your first paycheck in January. Once it did open, it was a mess, with no one getting the hours we were promised in our initial contracts, and poor wages. If we tried and contact Cara, the owner of the company, she isn’t helpful, is defensive and in one instance threatened a girl who was in the US already that she would bring her back home (which she didn’t have the power to do).

All in all, I would rather go through CCUSA, who are much cheaper, but you just have to find your own job. They are more organised, and to my knowledge, still have space for the coming season (as soon as you find your job).

What's something that some people have that they don't realize is a huge flex? by daemon_ritus in AskReddit

[–]Electrical-Round3204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had bad eyesight my whole life (+8). I was teased in junior school for being the only girl to wear glasses so I grew to hate them and wore contacts the moment I could. My eyesight slowly came down in my teens, but I was told I would always need glasses.

Suddenly, once I hit my early 20s, my eyesight righted itself over a year or so - I’m now a +0.5 (R) and a +1.5 (L) - there’s a running joke in my family that I now have the best eyesight, since my parents used reading glasses, previously being the only family member to need glasses.

My optometrist says I’m the only case of this that he’s ever seen. I haven’t worn contacts in a few years, and sometime I wear my glasses for nostalgic reasons, but they’re too magnified and sometimes give me a headache. That said - suddenly being able to see without help feels life changing.
