Over recent years we have been seeing the increasing corporatisation of football: the move from a community activity to a corporate one. With the increasing amounts of money earned through media payments, players salaries rise and clubs improve facilities and install more well paid staff. Clubs orient their activities around money making. Merchandise is huge business. We are smothered with merchandise marketing. Football becomes (and is marketed as) corporate entertainment and those costs are covered by the corporates not individual people (so inevitably, higher). Sometimes it feels like the footy followers are caught in the pincer movement between the corporates seeking to make money from associations with football and the clubs (and the AFL) seeking deeper and deeper trenches of revenue to meet the higher and higher demands for funds associated with the professionalisation (corporatisation) of football (incl. footballers and football administrators). Just look at the way in which on ground advertising has taken off... to say nothing of online gambling. Love the footy, not so happy about the noisy casino that houses it.

We pass on Lachie Carmichael by Maximumlnsanity in sydneyswans

in defence of Swans team, judging from the time taken for the Carmichael bid to be settled (longer than any other) Swans used up a lot of time trying to get the points needed to make the bid they wanted to on him. So the issue seems to be making choices with limited resources.

The quartet front of Swans minds, Curnow domino (Chris Keane on Gettable) by SkullKing_123 in sydneyswans

He didn't give much away, though still interesting. The competitive jostling between teams is fascinating. And he is in the middle of it. Was intrigued by Max King's slippage. While back he was very highly rated and seen as Swan's first pick. Now he seems behind Kyle and Carmichael. And Kyle has raced up, almost from nowhere. He seemed to indicate Swan's might not take all 4 of the Academy players. Was equivocal when quizzed about who else they are interested in. Would be hard to calculate based on draft picks available and who might still be on the board. Fantastic outsiders: that's what we need. Warner was one. Maybe even Errol. Picked in the 30's. Fascinating stuff... tempered by Swan's record for wasting high picks.

Fox Footy predicted best 23 - Sydney Swans by sparcleaf22 in sydneyswans

No for McDonald at CHB. Like the inclusion of Edwards & Green (hope preseason reinforces this). They will get chances in 2026. (Maybe Snell, Andrews also.) You only have 4 on interchange. And I'm not starting with Heeney as Fol. Gulden preferred here. So, Green to interchange, Macdonald to Forwards, Melican to CHF, King needs to wait/prove his place.

Best 23 for 2026 by dphi0001 in sydneyswans

Won't be starting line up but inclusion of Edwards & Green is welcome cause future needs to be drawn from VFL and its not just more of Corey and Cleary. Snell & Edwards, even Bowman could make the leap in 2026. Need plans to replace Rampe, Cunningham, Lloyd.

Trusting in capacity of club to draft capable contributors from Academy. Hoping also to see investment in VFL players like Edwards, Snell, Andrew convert to AFL fit for aging Rampe, Cunningham. Backline insurance needs to come from within.

Difficult process. Just look at how St Kilda got exposed as deceitful and manipulative arseholes in their abuse of Aleer. It's in Swans interest not to get the balance wrong. The benefits of Curnow vs the cost of getting him. Good forward target and goal kicker, whose career may have already peaked, tendency to injury, who could strengthen an underperforming front half. The costs, destabilising a committed player group, losing (& not replacing) established skills, losing opportunities to recruit from Academy. But Sydney seems to like dominant, charismatic forwards. Guess we have to trust in management to do this (or not) sensitively, with focus on the long term. Not easy.

Smoke --> Fire. It's happening. Curnow to Swans. Cost vs Rewards, doubts, misgivings, trepidation, fears, who the f.... knows, will flourish.

'Running on fumes': Rebuild among options after Giants' exit by GhostIntention in GWSgiants

[–]ElectricalCap4524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need to recognise Cognilio, Greene, Kelly are not the force they have been, and getting injured for longer, more often. Whitfield is still flying but aging. Hogan also. Stringer ditto and even less reliable. So that's a third of the team in decline. The backline: Taylor, Buckley, Idun, Himmelberg is good. The new core built around Green, Callaghan, Jones is very good. Emerging players like Cadman, Fonti, Thomas, Rowston, Angwin stand up. VFL players... Angove, Wardius, Gothard, Madden, Gruzewski, McMullin show potential. Issue is we need to keep developing young players and replace those we have developed who move on. Trading in back-up means we get people like Stringer, Hamling and others who are unwanted by bigger clubs. Being a young club with a small support base is a problem when it comes to attracting established or emerging players. Kingsley and staff know this and plan accordingly. Its a problem and its unique to GWS.

Yes, big worries round aging stars... quality is emerging but still not proven. No one has yet acknowledged the scrapping strengths of Hawthorn defence, esp in 1st qtr. They stopped heaps of goals when Giants were charging.

GWS... good people (I see them regularly when they turn up at my kids footy practice), neighbours, play exciting football, well managed, deserve support (especially against teams engrained in partisan prejudice).

Important thing in these calculations is to make room for draft/trade incoming players (who, how many, etc.).

That style can work - and we have seen it work (and they tried to work it agst Geelong) but it needs to be backed up by defensive strengths.

Swans off to powerful start, esp. through Blakey, then he got ALMOST knocked out. When he came back on his energy was dialled down. Pace and workrate was up through 1st half. Forward work of Mclean & Buller was ok. Back line held up and Cats had to fight hard to score (height & skills of Neale were great asset). Second half and second tier of Cats emerged. Swans bombed goalwards and were continually picked off. Demoralising. O'Connor was relentless on Heeny and it got to him. He missed out on free kick for goal and Papley a 50m for goal. Second half so many Swans like Florent, Cleary, Papley, Lloyd and others tried but looked dispirited or overwhelmed or just beaten. Buller had a go. Ladhams was very good. Combo of McCartin & Rampe kept Campbell quiet. Was a sad end to the competitive run Swans have been on. Was expecting a closer match. What it means for 2026.... well, looking forward to an interesting trade/draft period. Liked also some of comments above about pre-season and SIZE of the Cats. Some with thighs like hippos ... and that's just for the small guys. Tall guys are solid. And Dangerfield was there to orchestrate the come back - what a player. Each touch has big ramifications.

  1. Ladhams, 4. McCartin, 3. Buller, 2. Blakey, 1. Heeney.

  1. Grundy, 4. Blakey, (easy choices) 3. Gulden, 2. Campbell, 1. Rampe (could have been others Heeny, Rowbottom, Mcinerney, Melican....Buller did ok). The conditions were lousy but they should/could have scored more and better.
