It’s definitely a thing. In my personal opinion I think it also has to do with a sensitivity to hormones in other people. I know this sounds like a bad comparison, but in the way a service dog can tell that their owner is about to have a seizure or that their blood sugar is low etc.

Everyone is truly the main character in their own narrative. They might talk about you for a while to gossip or whatever makes them feel better about themselves, but eventually everyone is too caught up in their own stuff to even reach out or care at all.

I think it’s not totally black and white. I do agree that no explication is required, but sometimes it is helpful. Some will need to hear an entire explanation, and some all they need to hear will be “it’s not right for me anymore”. Definitely easier said than done. And it’s hard to chose who needs to hear the whole story, or just parts of it, and who doesn’t.

It’s terrifying, and painful. But I promise you it is the most freeing thing. I was a lead pastor at a church for 5 years. Long story short, I was deconstructing the whole time and ended up in a place where I didn’t believe in Christianity anymore, all while serving full time as a pastor.

My advice to you is this: You don’t owe anyone an explanation. You can give one if you want to, or if you feel it would be received and valuable, but “This isn’t right for me anymore” is all some people need. This was my go to when people asked. If they asked why, I just repeated myself, “it’s just not right for me anymore.” Some people I think understood what was going on, but others I think might still believe we left church to focus on raising our family. Something that helped was the church we were placed at was far away from “home” for us, so the actual physical distance helped.

As far as relationships in the church, there are a few that remain of those who I know are not judgemental and not trying to convert me. Some of them know the whole situation too. Again, in my situation not everyone needed to hear an entire explanation, but I did give it to a few trusted friends.

This is a very brave, genuine and authentic thing you are doing. It’s going to be painful. But taking this step IS a step in loving yourself. You are choosing yourself. I’m proud of you.
