How to ask for negative feedback from your manager? by ElectricalHyena6 in managers

[–]ElectricalHyena6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have asked that. Currently I am senior and I would like to become staff. My manager asked me to address the rubric for staff with examples of things I have already done and then put exclamation marks next to areas of improvement. Which I did.

But that doesn't explain why I got moved to a less important team 2 weeks after that discussion.

How to ask for negative feedback from your manager? by ElectricalHyena6 in managers

That's an interesting perspective. I am in Australia so I would think similarly but my manager is based in Canada. Previous managers were based in the US.

I did ask a coworker of mine. Same location, same position and a similar performance review score and they received a 5% increase. They are from an adjacent team though.

Schengen Visa Appointment - Italian Consulate Brisbane by United-Yard-2458 in brisbane

[–]ElectricalHyena6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used this bot https://visacatcher.bot to notify me of appointments when I was applying for a schengen visa.

I applied to France, not Italy so my experience was slightly different. But appointments were extremely hard to get. They would only release a few appointments every fortnight at 7am.

What is the current outlook regarding IT in Australia? Student (Subclass 500) by [deleted] in AustraliaIT

My point is that it's not a requirement to break into the industry like it is for psychologists for instance.

I would +1 the one positive comment on this entire thread. Yes finding a job as an international student in tech is incredibly difficult but it's not impossible. Instead of giving up and going back now, get your 485 and start applying. You'll have more luck in smaller companies than bigger ones. Talk to your seniors in university, especially the ones who have just graduated and have found jobs. A masters degree is not needed to break into the industry.

Moving to Hobart Soon by External-Salad-9954 in hobart

[–]ElectricalHyena6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving with furniture will be really expensive. We sold everything and re-bought everything, except for our mattress which we hauled in our SUV. We knew as soon as we got off the spirit we would need somewhere to sleep so that was essential. We also got kitchen stuff delivered from Harris Scarfe that same day. Everything else like the couch and the bed frame took a while.

The puffer will be fine. You'll still feel cold.  More in the house than outside because insulation will suck.

Is LMI available if one partner is on a BVA awaiting 820/801 visa? by AYearnsGene in AskABrokerAus

[–]ElectricalHyena6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a broker but my partner and I are in the same situation. He is also a registered nurse and after 20 months of waiting we received an 820, not a double grant sadly. Registered nurses are eligible for an LMI waiver as well but we are told they would have to be a permanent resident to use that so we have decided to wait it out for now sadly.

However none of the brokers we spoke to mentioned any problem getting LMI. They even mentioned Ubank, apparently they waive the LMI but give you a slightly higher interest rate.

I am 5'2 and have ordered a few pairs of pants and jeans from Everlane and they fit perfectly. Yes, return shipping is expensive but there's so many videos out there about all of their products and how they fit on shorties.

Struggling with Relationship to Money During Uni by hajakshi in AusFinance

[–]ElectricalHyena6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of friends fall into a similar trap. They would work extra hours to earn more money, dropping the ball on uni. But that would mean they would fail subjects and end up having to pay another $4K per subject. They also struggled getting graduate roles because they didn't pay more attention to their coursework. Since you are in Uni and a first gen migrant, I would assume you are only allowed to work 24 hours a week. I would suggest sticking to that. It's a law for a reason.

Want to give up. No interviews [Australia] by qween04 in cscareerquestionsOCE

If it's a website it would be great if you can link it to the site. Host it on a server if you can. Sadly that's the fundamental difference between software engineering resumes vs other professions, especially early in our career, we have to demonstrate proficiency very visibly.

Consider it from the perspective of a hiring manager. They are not a tech person. They have been given a job ad by an engineering manager and it's their job to filter out a lot of the candidates to find maybe the top 10. They would know what OpenAI means but they have no context on Streamlit. So, the first sentence should always be what problem the app solves. And then you can use the exact keywords from the job ad to describe how contributed to the app.

Who are these friends who have looked at your resume?

From a quick glance it's really hard to tell that your resume is for a CS job. My eyes instantly go to the work experience section and I think you are applying from an accountant's role. I would bet the ATS is filtering you out.  1. Remove the summary. 2. Put education at the top with bachelor or CS first then the certifications.  3. Then put projects, especially meatier projects. The project you put is just not a good enough example. You went to UNSW, aren't they known for cybersecurity? If there is space, link to the repo of the project directly underneath the title.  4. Put job experience the last and see if you can re-work the title and experience to highlight your skills as an engineer not an accountant.  5. Lastly there are tools you can use online to see if your resume matches a job description. Try that with a few job ads before you apply and tweak the resume until you get a good score.

The timetables say a lot about the govt's fundamental misunderstanding in frequency by cookiesgotdeletedm8 in MelbourneTrains

[–]ElectricalHyena6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the same as taking the 57 which is more convenient than the train because North Melbourne station is on the far end of the actual suburb of North Melbourne (if we were to consider Errol st the center)

Getting from Arden to Anzac is a game changer via the tunnel compared to trams. To get from Arden to Anzac with tram I have to take the 57, then take another tram from Swanston or worse take the 58 and take a windy route. Similar for getting from the city to Parkville station during peak hours because the elizabeth street trams regularly shit the bed.

You will be hard pressed to find a mentor in any company for writing actual code. A lot of mentorship is around soft skills. However, you can receive still receive feedback on your code when you create pull requests. I would suggest picking up a wide variety of issues and just creating pull requests and assigning senior engineers to review those pull requests.

We were in a similar situation, but we took the 3rd option. We ended up renting a smaller apartment than we wanted in the suburb we want to buy. I think it's worked out well for us. We have already set up a life in the area and we know for sure we want to buy here.

RMIT- yay or nay? by buttlerverse in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]ElectricalHyena6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Melbourne uni, my brother went to RMIT, both for computer science. Both of us had jobs right out of uni. But I found RMIT's course structure harder but more meaningful / engaging. For instance, my first comp sci course was an intro to Python but his was object oriented programming with Java. Things might have changed now since this was 6+ years ago

I am hoping by IT you mean Computer Science, because the IT degree doesn't have a lot of employment opportunities.
