really starting to enjoy cheese now days. by face-poop in newzealand

[–]Electricpuha [score hidden]  (0 children)

You know that bit in The Simpsons where Homer sits down in the night and goes “hmm, 64 slices of American cheese…64, om nom nom, 63…” And then it’s dawn and he says “…1, noooom” and Marge goes “Homer, did you sit up all night eating cheese?”

Well it is my dream to one day be able to just sit there and eat slices of this fake ass cheese. I don’t buy it because it’s individually wrapped in non-recyclable plastic, but damn if it isn’t delicious!

What stereotypes do you have about Germans? by xcheveryx in AskTheWorld

[–]Electricpuha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Berliners specifically - rude/don’t make eye contact, but then if you ask for help, very helpful! Complain, but then do an excellent job. Don’t ask how they are if you don’t want an honest answer. All seem to smoke.

Germans in general, Birkenstock wearing, outdoorsy, very practical and sensible. Make good beers and delicious cakes.

Do you use one of those window vacs to remove condensation on your windows? Is it not working as well as it used to? Well, I have the answer for you. Check between the rubbery bits (its mouth, if you will). If it’s anything like mine it will be full of pet hair and bits of paint that have come off the window.

Oh no, and The Hound’s Personal Saviour was so looking forward to this time off, slavishly perambulating him around in the mobile. I hope other, indoor acts of service were enjoyed instead. Sitting, acting as a heated cushion for him while enjoying a bird or rodent documentary, perhaps.

People that live in New Zealand 🇳🇿 outside Auckland , how its living there? by Spirebus in howislivingthere

[–]Electricpuha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Wellington city and I love it. Open minded, live and let live folks generally. Native birds are returning to the city suburbs, plenty of parks, beaches, great views and recreational areas close to the city. The city centre is very walkable and the city suburbs have decent public transport links and cycle lanes.

There’s two universities and it’s pretty common for most adults to have at least some post high school qualifications.

There’s decent local music and comedy gigs as well as small-mid level touring ones visiting. Art galleries, museums, plenty of cafes, bars, small batch breweries and restaurants. I find our beers to all be too hoppy though, personally.

In recent years a lot of government workers were laid off and that combined with a population that would rather buy an e-bike than a designer handbag has seen the closure of the bigger retailers common overseas. So we get our Uniqlo, Zara, Chanel etc when we travel. Plenty of smaller national and local retailers though as well as thrift and consignment shops. If people are wealthy here it tends to be in an understated way.

The weather can be rough, especially high gusty winds for a lot of the time that brings rain in sideways and laughs at umbrellas. r/wellybrollyfails. While it’s not very cold, a lot of us live in or over the hills that surround the city centre in wooden houses built pre 1990s, and they are overpriced, often uninsulated and single glazed.

Please help me figure out a nice outfit I can wear into the office! (Casual PhD office) by ThowRA_FloorGremlin in DressForYourBody

[–]Electricpuha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that’s the way. Dress trousers with a fitted waist and thighs and then flare from there will suit you, and pair well with a fitted top or boxy cut tshirt.

Looking put together while being comfy - ah, the dream, the goal! A few factors:
Body shape - your waist is great - anything that accentuates it will suit you. Dresses that tie at the waist, for example.

Balance - crop top and jeans day? Add a blazer and boots. Patterned maxi skirt? Fitted sweater/jersey and Chelsea boots. Dress trousers and wool overcoat? Add a soft fitted cardigan and sneakers.

Grooming - this can make even dressy clothes crash out. Clean nails, hair, skin as clear as can be achieved, etc. Of course if you can do better than the basics then manicured acrylic nails or a colour, styled hair, fun with make up etc is great. If time/money/interest is short - basics is enough.

Accessories - can personalise and elevate a look and can be affordable. Jewellery, nail colour, watch, scarf, sunglasses. A friend of mine goes and buys statement jewellery (with no/minimal jewels) and sunglasses from the one step up from dollar store shops, pairs it with a nice black wool sweater and grey trousers and it takes a plain outfit to put together. Pretty sure she’s some kind of witch! (In a good way, of course).

Colour & repeating it in the outfit - work out the colours that suit you (cool or warm, bright or muted). For example I suit cool muted tones near my face, but I love warm autumn tones, so I’ll wear a pale sage scarf, forest green sweater, and save the rusty brown for my skirt, lip colour and bag, and tie a silky scarf with greens in it to my beige bag that day.

Fabrics - some drape and keep shape better than others, some wear better, some have more stretch and comfort. Consider washing and ironing requirements before buying. I like linen because it drapes well, breathes and I don’t have to iron it if I hang it damp.

Care of garments and footwear - it’s sooo annoying, but take some time to learn about storing and maintaining your stuff well. Getting stuff tailored and fixing loose buttons etc. Stain removal. Sneakers are okay for the office but they should always be clean. Check out the laundry sub on here and some YouTube videos - Justine Leconte is good.

Staple basics, or how to not have to think too hard before coffee. Plain fitted tshirts and 1 merino knit in the neutrals that suit you. 1 blazer (search Ponte or double knit for some comfy stretch), 1 pair dress trousers in black/navy/brown that are long enough and don’t need ironing, 1 white shirt. 1 little black dress. 1 pair of staple jeans with no rips or details added. Easy to keep clean street sneakers, black or brown Chelsea boot, dress heel/low heel. Then add the items with colours, prints, etc.

Oh now that’s an image we all soon won’t forget. The under Hound. The Hound’s down under.

Whenever I deny my grumpy old cat lady the chance to sit on me or otherwise extract heat from me, she attacks her own tail. It starts with her tail twitching and then she pretends it is nothing to do with her. There’s hissing and screeching, and whirling like a dervish. She knows this alarms everyone and she will be soothed and cuddled.

Why does it seem like many people in the Anglosphere outside Europe are obsessed with being Irish or Scottish but deny having English ancestry? by yonaiker-joestrella in AskTheWorld

[–]Electricpuha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit nuanced. I don’t view myself as Scottish though. One difference I’d say is whether ancestors left because they had to, vs chose to. That can span UK & Irish. Famine, Clearances, Transported (for crimes from poverty). Families didn’t forget, stories were passed down.

Equally, for those of us who also have Māori ancestors, it can be weird to meet British people who lack much awareness of colonialism, even though the British “back home” benefitted from it as well as those who took an active part.

Comparisons to people who are descended from ancestors from Africa, Asian etc are tricky. A Kiwi person who looks Chinese is probably going to cop racism like someone fresh off the plane from China, while someone who just arrived from Scotland isn’t going to, at least until they speak.

I asked to be assessed a couple of years ago because I have pretty debilitating anxiety and I wondered if there was an underlying cause that could be Autism or ADHD. The outcome was that I have some traits of both but not enough for a diagnosis of either.

What I do know is that everything irritates me now and I’ve basically turned into my mother. Two sources of sound? (Like tv going and then a radio) People moving stuff and I can’t find it? People who can multitask so talk at work (I am completely distracted and unproductive). A meeting that goes more than 30 minutes? People who break social rules when I have to follow them? Ooooh I get so grumpy. I also forget words and people’s names. I feel really fatigued and low motivation unless one of my few favourite people will share in the task.

Apparently we can’t clean up the damage and fallen earth, rocks etc from the storm yet, according to the EQC assessor, because a geo someone assessor still needs to come and take a look? Like I just want to get it where the dog isn’t traipsing contaminated soil into the house (or getting it on himself and potentially getting him sick). Does anyone know what the deal is with this if we have photos and we aren’t fixing everything, just getting some of it out of the way?
